This is the classic, long-burning collapsible candle lantern that has provided warm natural light to thousands of outdoor enthusiasts for decades. It is perfectly suited to backpacking, mountaineering, snow camping and similar outdoor pursuits, as well as providing convenient emergency backup lighting. The Original Candle Lantern utilizes one UCO 9-hour candle, surrounding it in the safest, most efficient lantern housing available anywhere. The spring powered candle tube pushes the candle up as it burns, keeping the flame burning at a constant height. A viewing slot allows the user to monitor the remaining burn time of the slow-burning candle.

One, it is sturdier built than I expected. For the size and weight I expected a less durable feeling unit that the one I received.
Two, it certainly is light and compact. Even inside the Neoprene cocoon (which I am glad I bought; the lantern comes with nothing by way of carrying pouch or anything) it will not take up much space on a shelf or in a pack.
I highly recommend the cocoon by the way. Seems a very wise investment.
Now I do have some complaints.
Since it telescopes, you have to pull the glassed section up out of the body. I found two problems with that:
It is very hard to pull hard enough to open it and not hard enough to do any damage. For example, the first time, I ended up with it almost bending as I apparently applied uneven pressure making one side open father than the other.
On top of that, the metal heat reflector/top of the glass section is attached to the housing by three tabs that penetrate the housing fully. These have sharp edges difficult to deal with due to their proximity to the housing (painted green) and scratched me quite nicely before I adjusted my grip when discovering they are sharp.
I was also not pleased to find out the base is plastic. Since this is the portion that must be twisted free to light and change the candles, I cannot help but question how long plastic locking into metal will stand up with repeated open/close.
A small thing, but a complaint none the less, is the chain attached to the hanger. I would have liked one that could be unclipped so that alternative hanging methods could more easily be used without the chain in the way.
I've tested this unit in a large SUV in Canadian winter temperatures (-15 C) for a couple of hours (approx. 4 in total) with the engine off and the candle actually kept an acceptable temperature inside the cab the whole time. Not comfortable by any means... but definitely survivable (as a last ditch solution). The folding small-format is a bonus too, as it will fit almost anywhere. And the lanterns all come with one 9-hour candle already installed, by the way.
Tip: Get the cocoon accessory too while you're at it. I got two of them on sale at under 10$/each. Definitely worth it, as it gives you a nice & thick protective foam layer to protect your lantern, especially the glass chimney that's most likely the weakest link of the entire unit.
Only problem is the chain will also get insaly hot and my tent nylon loop melted, the lantern fell.
This happened while using the blue citronella candles, I do not remember if it is getting as hot with the regular ones, and there was literally no wind that night, so the hot air was not circulating.
But still one or two of the chain rings, or the hook itself should be made with another material that does not get hot.
Otherwise this is the perfect tool to make sure your tent is not humid in the morning

Glass gets incredibly hot, burned my fingers, throw it out because of the pain and was close to set the whole campground into a blaze.Published 5 hours ago by Fred
These candle lanterns--gotta say, they are slick. Now, granted they are a candle, but they are better than just a candle. Read morePublished 5 days ago by hdamoca
This is my second UCO lantern, love these things. Provides enough light to get around in a 4 man tent and actually helps take the chill out. Read morePublished 26 days ago by Shawn in Calgary
I'm glad I chose the brass version! It's a bit heavier than the original but it's a solid little lantern and will take on a nice finish once the brass starts to tarnish. Read morePublished 4 months ago by SirFlipp

Works as expected. It is a candle lantern so don't expect it to be as bright as a battery powered one but it does put off a good amount of heat. Read morePublished 5 months ago by DF
