Hoping to rescue Shay, Tally sets off on the dangerous journey as a spy. But after finally reaching The Smoke she has a change of heart when her new lover David reveals to her the sinister secret behind becoming pretty. The fast-moving story is enlivened by many action sequences in the style of videogames, using intriguing inventions like hoverboards that use the rider’s skateboard skills to skim through the air, and bungee jackets that make wild downward plunges survivable -- and fun. Behind all the commotion is the disturbing vision of our own society -- the Rusties -- visible only in rusting ruins after a virus destroyed all petroleum. Grade 6 Up–Tally Youngblood lives in a futuristic society that acculturates its citizens to believe that they are ugly until age 16 when they'll undergo an operation that will change them into pleasure-seeking "pretties." Anticipating this happy transformation, Tally meets Shay, another female ugly, who shares her enjoyment of hoverboarding and risky pranks. But Shay also disdains the false values and programmed conformity of the society and urges Tally to defect with her to the Smoke, a distant settlement of simple-living conscientious objectors. Tally declines, yet when Shay is found missing by the authorities, Tally is coerced by the cruel Dr. Cable to find her and her compatriots–or remain forever "ugly." Tally's adventuresome spirit helps her locate Shay and the Smoke. It also attracts the eye of David, the aptly named youthful rebel leader to whose attentions Tally warms. However, she knows she is living a lie, for she is a spy who wears an eye-activated locator pendant that threatens to blow the rebels' cover. Ethical concerns will provide a good source of discussion as honesty, justice, and free will are all oppressed in this well-conceived dystopia. Characterization, which flirts so openly with the importance of teen self-concept, is strong, and although lengthy, the novel is highly readable with a convincing plot that incorporates futuristic technologies and a disturbing commentary on our current public policies. Tally Youngblood is about to turn 16. And in her world, that means you get to turn Pretty. Tally can't wait to get her surgery and escape Uglyville for good. She stares at the towers of New Pretty Town every night, dreaming of finally joining her older friends and their never-ending parties.But all that changes when Tally meets Shay. Shay thinks that people look fine they way they were born, that they should stay Ugly. She also tells Tally that she has a choice: Pretty surgery, or an escape to a rebel camp in the wild called The Smoke. Then Tally is refused her operation. She is told that she must find the Smoke and betray the rebels, or she will be forced to remain Ugly forever. Tally agrees, but she quickly discovers that there is more to the Smoke than she thought. And could there be a sinister side to the Operation? After you read this incredible book, you'll also want to check out the sequels, "Specials" and "Extras." "Uglies" races along at a break-neck pace, presenting a chilling view of a post-apocalyptic world where the government's control is almost absolute. This is one of my favourite books EVER.

Westerfeld's created an amazing world, where being pretty is everything. The book was so good it only took me 2 days to read. Tally's struggle with herself and the truth leads her on an epic journey. The interactions between David and Tally are well thought out, and the plot is thought provoking. Truly a good read.

An easy read with a good adventure and a young heroin. Although I am no that young anymore, I loved it and I think ados will do as well. The book is full of very accurate descriptions about the power (and desire) of beauty in our society. After reading it in 2 days, I instantly ordered Book 2 of the series: "Pretties".
