This is the second language I'm learning using this method and I love it. I am a busy woman and I learn my lessons daily while walking the dog, driving to work, etc., so this is perfect for me as I would never have time to sit down and do it. I do think it depends on your personal, preferred learning method that's best for you: Are you visual, auditory or kinesthetic person? For me, this works best. Once I'm done studying all the lessons, I might buy a phrase book to learn the alphabeth.

There is a lack of materials for learning Ukrainian, so I did buy my first Pimsleur course. The ideal behind this course is that we speak a language first then we learn to read and write it. Well that is true about children who have a good Language Acquisition Devise (LAD) but not adult learners. We basically only remember 20 percent of what we hear. This course is only auditory so do supplement it with some type of book. The lessons are a half hour and I have completed all 10 lessons which are in this basic course. I can say "I want two beers.","What do you want to drink?" but I could say these phrases from previous courses. I prefer a compact course and shorter lessons I don't have to say "yes" and "thank you" a dozen times in a half hour. I do speak Russian, Polish, and Croatian. I grew up speaking these languages. If you are going to the country it is important to be able to read the major signs in the language which this course fails to do. My suggestion is C.D. the spoken part of the lessons and have a CD that will print the spoken lesson that way I will learn 50 percent of the material. I also found the speakers to be very fast which can be very difficult to learning the language-some backward chaining is used -which means learning the last syllable then learning the beginning syllables.

Pretty Good Until the Jump, Mar 20 2009

The CDs provide a fairly effective means of learning, but I needed to enter the spoken phrases on web translation tools just to be able to see the words.
Here's the problem with these lessons... At about the eight minute mark of lesson 5, suddenly you were asked to say, "Wouldn't you like something to eat?" There is a complete disjoint here. Up to this point everything was taught almost syllable by syllable. Then bam, a 20 syllable sentence that I had to figure out on my own. I was lost the rest of the way. I just went back to that CD to find the phrase and work my way through it again. There must be a lesson missing, because they seemed to jump ahead somehow. This omission knocked them down from 4 stars to 2.
The lessons seem to be geared toward someone trying to pick up women. That's probably why most people go there. I need to travel into the remote areas to visit my daughter in the Peace Corps. Still, it's good to be able to recognize what is being said.
