Ultimate Bird Lover, April 7 2010
By Janice E. Gurley "Jan4Jesus" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Ultimate Bird Lover: Stories and Advice on Our Feathered Friends at Home and in the Wild (Paperback)
This book should be titled "Chicken Soup for the Bird Lover's Soul". Wonderful photographs of various birds. It would have been nice to know what kind of birds they were.

assortment of stories and information about wild and companion birds, Dec 1 2010
By Amy Hopkins - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Ultimate Bird Lover: Stories and Advice on Our Feathered Friends at Home and in the Wild (Paperback)
This new book, the first in the "Ultimate" series, has a bit of everything in it for both the companion and wild bird lover. The first two-thirds of the book is filled with little vignettes about all kinds of birds. Sections include, "Lessons from the Backyard", "Perfect Companions", "Comedians with Feathers", "Saving the Wild", "Wisdom from the Flock", and "They Come in All Shapes and Sizes". Stories range from the humorous to the tragic. If you don't like one story, just move on to the next! There is the story of Nikki, the older African Grey, and his rivalry with new youngster Coco, another African Grey. Reading about the older "brother" coming to terms with the new arrival reads just like a story of sibling rivalry among human brothers. There is the teacher whose students are always distracted by bird love-making outside the window. And there is Soda, the Moluccan cockatoo star of the San Francisco SPCA Humane Education Program. Some stories are better than others, but with the amount of little stories in this book, there are plenty for everyone!
The last third of the book completely changes gears. This section, called "Must-Know-Info", includes a variety of articles by experts, including avian vets, on how to feed wild birds, citizen science, ten great birding sites in the U.S. and Canada, how to help baby, sick, and injured wild birds, introducing children to birding, helping wild birds thrive, choosing the best companion bird, household hazards for birds, wing clipping, cages, perches, nutrition and food, and keeping bird brains engaged. Quite the assortment of topics!
Adding color and beauty to this book are almost 70 color photographs of both wild and companion birds interspersed through the book. The birds in the photos are not identified, unfortunately.
All in all, this is an interesting book with a lot going on. There's plenty here to keep everyone who loves birds entertained and some useful information too to round out the book.
