Product Description

Album Description

Japanese pressing includes 2 new tracks. Besting 1991's Greatest Hits with a longer track list and the inclusion of two new recordings, the Eurythmics' Ultimate Collection is a definitive exhibition of the band's best songs. The Eurythmics were always a singles band, and a set such as this--with indelible hypnotic/robotic grooves like 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)' alongside the synth-pop melancholia of 'Here Comes the Rain Again' and raucous neo-soul like 'Would I Lie to You?', helps one appreciate how much great work the duo produced. By the late '80s and into the '90s, the Eurythmics sound favored sweeping balladry and smooth, loungy productions (the closer of the set, 'Was It Just Another Love Affair?', is a case in point). There is a fair sampling of that material, but Ultimate sticks primarily to the band's mid-'80s peak, showcasing their finest songs, the superb producing and arranging of Dave Stewart, and the exceptional vocals of Annie Lennox. Sony. 2006.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not ultimate at all, Oct 30 2008

Eurythmics made some of the greatest sounds of the 1980 in many genres, not just the standard synth-pop. Lennox & Stuart also made a major contribution in the forgotten band The Tourists before the birth of Eurythmics. Unfortunately this album contains too many tracks already available on Greatest Hits.

Some less inspired songs from the 1990s have been added. This really shows a lack of interest and imagination in view of the huge treasure trove of classic album tracks. The compilers could have chosen The Last Time from Revenge, Jennifer from Sweet Dreams, Shame & Beethoven (I Love to Listen to) from Savage, When the Day Comes Down from We Too Are One and Belinda & She's Invisible Now from the obscure first album In the Garden.
But for those who never got round to Greatest Hits, it's a worthwhile purchase. Every rhythm they took, they made their own: consider the catchy calypso of Right By Your Side, grand rock ballads like Thorn In My Side and When Tomorrow Comes or the perfect pop of Love is a Stranger. Their emotional range is unique: the chilling menace of You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart makes a stark contrast to the joyful exuberance of There Must Be An Angel or the powerful affirmative Sisters Are Doing it for Themselves.

The new single I've Got a Life is shouting like a "classic" eURYTHMICs song. In fact Annie Lennox said in an interview that the songs Sweet Dreams(are made of this) and I've Got A Life would be the "bookends" of her and Dave Stewart's work. The other new song Was It Just Another Love Affair, is definitely La Lennoxa and Dave Stewart's style merge into one.
I encorage everyone to grab a copy of this CD because of the remastered classic hits. Definitely a MUST BUY!!
