From the get-go, her identity was shrouded in secrecy. To prolong the ruse, her debut album on Gordy featured no photos of her, only a soft-focus image of the sea and sky. The ploy worked: Her first single, "I'm a Sucker for Your Love," a duet with Rick James, reached #8 R&B. When the truth was learned and the jig was up, it was too late: an R&B hitmaker was let lose, and there was no stopping her. Between '79 and '91, she had 23 R&B hits; of those Seven were Top 10.
For the First Time, her finest fire from both her Gordy/Motown and Epic years is captured on a single CD, including "I Need Your Lovin'"; "Suqare Biz"; "Lovergirl"; her two duets with Rick James, "I'm a Sucker for Your Love" and "Fire & Desire"; and her tribute to fellow Motown-to-Sony defector, Marvin Gaye, "My Dear Mr. Gaye."
Still, the collection offers a great glimpse into, undeniably, one of the most underrated artists in popular music, namely in the past 25 years. People who are new to Teena Marie will love it, and I'm happy for them....we've all been there before, hungry to discover more material from an artist after having just heard their "Best of" collection!!! So, to those people, enjoy yourself and have fun! I expect that, in time, she will get the praise that Lady T deseves; and when she does, people like us will say "It's about freakin' time!" Peace.
This collection spans both those labels, but it is really far from "Ultimate". I'm happy to see some of my favorites here (especially PORTUGUESE LOVE- one of, if not the greatest song she ever recorded), but the are some omissions that I just cannot get past. Where is OUT ON A LIMB? Where is CASANOVA BROWN (it wasnt a single, but it is a perennial fan favorite)? And most unforgivable of all....where is her only, I repeat, ONLY #1 R&B hit, OOH LA LA LA????? How on Earth can this be considered Ultimate????
Oh well. There are many good songs here, so if you MUST only buy one CD, this would be it. But in the meantime, I guess I was best off with both a Motown Greatest Hits and an Epic Greatest Hits (and both labels have released multiple collections of her respective works there)...
How can I describe Ms. Marie to someone who has never heard her? Probably impossible and most limit their descriptions to the fact that she's a little white girl who sang R&B like a sister and that she started out with Rick James; however that's only where her story starts.
This woman is as multitalented as Prince and it's too bad that she stopped recording. Her songs have elements of funk, metal, r&b, and every other style that you can think of. Also she throws in some major Spanish flavor to some songs and although I love every single song, the standouts may be those that were not major hits as it is with those songs that you can really see all the layers working.
All Teena lovers, run to buy this release. Just imagine listening to "If I Were A Bell" on CD! All others who don't know Teena owe theselves the pleasure of listening to a true original. Forget the Mariah's, Alicia Keys', Beyonce's and even those with more critical appeal as no one touches this amazing woman's talent and original musical output. No one "handled" her or worked on her "image", as she did what she wanted and unlike many artists, her work is not self-indulgent. IT ROCKS!!
