Right up there with Myst, Riven, and the reams of hunting games currently flooding the market, Microsoft's Flight Simulator series is a mainstay on the computer game bestseller lists year in and year out. Though it has been out for over a year now, it's such an exhaustive and valuable resource that we feel any serious Flight Sim jockey should have it in his or her library. This massive tome (which tips in at 1,000 pages) covers the Microsoft Flight Simulator for Windows 95 and Flight Simulator 98 releases and serves up just about everything there is to know about the games and the challenge of becoming a master virtual pilot. It's easy to get intimidated by your first glance at this book--if you're not put off by the sheer size of the thing. After all, the numerous discussions of physics and the real-world science of flight might just do the trick. However, author Nick Darghi has gathered a ton of useful information here, and we're certain that hardcore fans of the game will appreciate his attention to detail. Even newcomers will find a lot to like in the book, and it's safe to say that any novice using this book in conjunction with the game's online manual will graduate to hardcore status in a hurry.

The Ultimate Flight Simulator Pilot's Guidebook also comes with a CD-ROM, which includes some add-on scenery, additional aircraft to fly (including the Messerschmitt Me 262, the original fighter jet), and a wealth of other tools and utilities. Much of this software is a bit dated (the book was released in December of 1997, after all), but it's still usable and can add a lot to an already outstanding simulation.

Book Description

The ultimate resource to the world of aviation for armchair pilots, this book covers all the technical aspects of flight navigation and piloting Microsoft's Flight Simulator, including a section written by a veteran commercial pilot. The CD-ROM has 650 Megabytes of software, including third-party maps, planners, new aircraft, and customization tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 'Bible' of Flight Simulator Books, July 14 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Ultimate Flight Simulator Pilot's Guidebook (Paperback)
This book is a masterpiece! Having also bought other flight sim books, they pale into insignificance compared to this effort. Quite how long it must have taken to write, I've no idea. But I do know there's tons of useful information - all well written, clear and accurate. I'm just reading it all again for a second time - it's that good. The CD also contains some excellent programs. In particular the moving map display is excellent.

Don't bother with any of the inside moves books - get this instead!

5.0 out of 5 stars A first rate book, comprehensive and thorough, Jun 6 1999
By Tim Chakravorty - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Ultimate Flight Simulator Pilot's Guidebook (Paperback)
This book is excellent, it will benefit both theorists (like myself) and those who are dying to get their planes off the ground. I think a baisc knowledge of the physics of flight is absolutely essential to be a pilot, good or not. Although formulae such as those for calculating moments of intertia of rigid bodies, would be beyond most readers, on the whole this book is the absolute best in it class! A note to critics of this book who think all they need is a 15 page manual full of keyboard short cuts to become a (virtual) pilot - It will never happen!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - Covers HUGE Range of Material - MANY Errata, Jan 23 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Ultimate Flight Simulator Pilot's Guidebook (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book that covers all aspects of the Microsoft Flight Simulator98 program as well as a HUGE amount of additional information. This book is very interesting and well written. Although there is a large number of equations in this book, each equation is followed by a solved example that makes the information crystal clear.

The text contains MANY errata. Fortunately the author has set up a web site where you can download the corrections and software patches/updates.

ENJOY!!!
