By Dr. Joseph Lee HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This Ultimate Guitar Collection (2004) is a 2 CD set, drawn from previous releases, forming like a Greatest Hits collection. Disc 1 has 19 tracks, while disc 2 has 22 tracks. All the tracks were personally chosen by John Williams. In the liner notes, it was stated: "John Williams plays often for films, such as The Deerhunter (Cavatina) and A Fish Called Wanda, and also plays tennis (badly), chess (quite good), table tennis (better) and likes talking (about anything)...

The song listing is as follows:

There are so many outstanding tracks that are my personal favourites, such as Myers's Cavatina, Tárrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Romance (the other outstanding version belongs to Liona Boyd), Morricone's The Mission, El Condor Pasa, Joplin's The Entertainer, Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, and Nino Rota's The Godfather.

Sony Classical was nice enough to use 20-bit Super Bit Mapping (SBM) to lay down the tracks. Thus, these original tracks are nice and clean. But unfortunately, like the rest of John Williams' discography, the digital engineer forgot to remaster each track properly to maximize the final sound. Here, if you look at the wave files on the computer screen, the amplitude is very low. Thus, one has to turn up the volume dial to listen the music. Fortunately in my case, I use Sound Forge 32-bit/96kHz digital remastering on these clean tracks. The result is an amazingly full sound with details and vibrancy.

If you like classical guitar music, John Williams is one of the masters. This set represents a good cross-section of John Williams' work, instead of buying individual CDs. This set is definitely highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Compilation of the Man on 2 Discs! Great Sound Quality Too! April 21 2006
By Frederick Baptist - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The title very aptly describes this great classical guitar album showcasing some of the best ever works of John Williams on 2 discs. The track selections are great as they span the centuries from the Baroque greats of Bach and Vivaldi to the modern day composers such as Stanley Myers and York. John even flirts with Blues and Jazz-style pieces and they actually sound very good. In addition, they did a much better mastering job on this version than on the single disc, "Classic John Williams" album that was released a few years earlier and so the sound quality is much better. John Williams' playing is without peer and his technique is superior to the vast majority of the exponents of classical guitar that are out there. I've heard recordings of many others who have tried to play "Cavatina" for example and they have never come close to the natural and flowing version that John plays. If you are a fan of this type of music or of John Williams' work, this is the best compilation that you can get that's out there. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A little something for everybody Jun 14 2005
By John Engstrom - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
First, this is gorgeous guitar playing by someone who knows what he's doing. John Williams (not to be confused by the film score composer of the same name) is a superb classical guitarist. Many of these pieces are *classical* in nature, while a few are more *popular*. Many are solo, the rest in small chamber groups. Some will get your toes tapping, some will start you daydreaming, and some will make you cry with their beauty. All of it is magnificent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb. Definitely recommended to lovers of classical guitar. Jan 9 2009
By S. Neeper - Published on Amazon.com

After nearly wearing out favorite CDs of Christopher Parkening and Segovia, I gave this John Williams collection a spin. I love the choice of tracks--some beautiful newer pieces in addition to crisp, lovely interpretations of several favorites (Asturias, La Vida Breve, Concierto de Aranjuez--you know, the ones everyone plays). He also fit in three Charlie Byrd blues tracks that, though not my favorites, work surprisingly well. William's playing is so clean and expressive--melodies ring out clearly, never belabored. Very pleasureful listening. Guess I'll be wearing this one out too...

Update: A few years later, I'm still loving the classical tracks but I've got to admit some of those "alternative" (non-classical) tracks aren't holding up to repeat listening. John Williams is not my man for syncopated material.
