5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of short films, Feb 8 2006
By Dorrie Wheeler - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Ultimate Lesbian Short Film Festival (DVD)
Wolf Video has released a collection of short films titled The Ultimate Lesbian Short Film Festival. Whether you are gay or straight, these are interesting short films worth checking out. The DVD includes 10 short films which vary in length but all are under the twenty minute mark. The topics vary. The DVD opens with the short film "Blow," in which a teenage girl comes out to her friend. The DVD also addresses the little talked about subject of abuse in same sex relationships. The remarkable film Dani & Alice deals with the final hours in a lesbian relationship. A seemingly upper class woman verbally and physically abuses her girlfriend who seems like she is a girl from the hood.

Another really good short on the DVD is Half Laughing. A very butch lesbian comes home for a family funeral. She confronts her mother about her poor attitude and the mother exclaims that she hates that she is gay. The mother hates the way that she is. The acting in this film is phenomenal. Another good film is Saint Henry in which a out of control woman robs a man in the streets with her best pal and then decides to search for her father. After the street robbery, her and her friend hide out in a church, thus the title Saint Henry.

My biggest gripe has to do with the advertising on the DVD box "The statement on the box reads "10 short films full of Intrigue! Fantasy! Suspense! and of course, SEX!" My problem with this statement is it too heavily focuses on the sex aspect of lesbianism whereas the films themself are emotional journeys. There is very little sex or even sexual situations in these films. The one film with a strong sexual theme is a short about an overweight woman who seems depressed and orders a lesbian call girl. These are great short films, so if you a film buff you should check out these shorts.

2.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER depressing look at the worst of gay life., Nov 7 2006
By Iryshkidd - Published on Amazon.com

Along with Go Fish, and a few other rock bottom depictions of how "WE" (speak for yourself) live our lives, this is depressing. The far too typical poor production value across the board applies here. The sex is absolutely uninspiring. But beyond that, it adds one more layer of stereotyping; a view from the gutter. HELLO! Millions of us DON'T live in the gutter. Even a movie that portrays that kind of life can be done well, but apparently too many lesbians don't know how to make those kinds of movies. (thank God Nicole Conn gave it up!!) Buy "Fingersmith" or "Loving Annabelle" or even "Tipping The Velvet", some of the best lesbian movies out there.

2.0 out of 5 stars This one could make you wanna go straight, Oct 7 2006

I agree with another reviewer when they wrote 'The only reason I even gave it 2 stars, is because it has "lesbian" anything in it...' I watched it with a friend and we both found it a totally depressing watch. Most the story lines are so negative that it makes you wonder if you should go straight. And the ones left over are killed by the dire production values. In what could be seen as a less than community minded act, after one watch I put it straight onto out local online auction site as i couldn't even be bothered having it my lesbian DVD collection its so annoying.
