Book Description

Nov 1 2010
“I didn’t decide to become anorexic. It snuck up on me disguised as a healthy diet, a professional attitude. Being as thin as possible was a way to make the job of being an actress easier . . .”
Portia de Rossi weighed only 82 pounds when she collapsed on the set of the Hollywood film in which she was playing her first leading role. This should have been the culmination of all her years of hard work—first as a child model in Australia, then as a cast member of one of the hottest shows on American television. On the outside she was thin and blond, glamorous and successful. On the inside, she was literally dying.
In this searing, unflinchingly honest book, Portia de Rossi captures the complex emotional truth of what it is like when food, weight, and body image take priority over every other human impulse or action. She recounts the elaborate rituals around eating that came to dominate hours of every day, from keeping her daily calorie intake below 300 to eating precisely measured amounts of food out of specific bowls and only with certain utensils. When this wasn’t enough, she resorted to purging and compulsive physical exercise, driving her body and spirit to the breaking point.
Even as she rose to fame as a cast member of the hit television shows Ally McBeal and Arrested Development, Portia alternately starved herself and binged, all the while terrified that the truth of her sexuality would be exposed in the tabloids. She reveals the heartache and fear that accompany a life lived in the closet, a sense of isolation that was only magnified by her unrelenting desire to be ever thinner. With the storytelling skills of a great novelist and the eye for detail of a poet, Portia makes transparent as never before the behaviors and emotions of someone living with an eating disorder.
From her lowest point, Portia began the painful climb back to a life of health and honesty, falling in love with and eventually marrying Ellen DeGeneres, and emerging as an outspoken and articulate advocate for gay rights and women’s health issues.
In this remarkable and beautifully written work, Portia shines a bright light on a dark subject. A crucial book for all those who might sometimes feel at war with themselves or their bodies, Unbearable Lightness is a story that inspires hope and nourishes the spirit.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Campbell, best known for his work on From Hell and his autobiographical Alec comics, has come up with a marvelous sui generis oddity: a meta-memoir about his own disappearance that's a kind of intently controlled nervous breakdown on paper. It's a nonlinear, mixed-media collage of a book—there are typeset prose passages, painted comics about his family, old-fashioned newspaper strips, photos with typeset word balloons, a child's crayon scrawl representing God and, near the end, an illustrated adaptation of O. Henry's story "The Confessions of a Humorist," which concerns how habitually turning life into art can make life unbearable. Campbell's always been interested in the curious nooks of history, and there's a running thread about artistic also-rans like Johann Schobert and the Greek sculptor Phidias; there's also an ongoing gag about Campbell replacing himself with an imaginary actor named Richard Siegrist. The tone is whimsical and playful, but there's a deep despair beneath it—about drinking, burnout and what happens to an artist "when his imaginary friends [stop] calling"—that overwhelms and takes the place of the plot. What pulls the whole thing together is Campbell's stunningly protean visual technique: fierce blotches of watercolor, scraggly pen-and-ink work and whiplash stylistic shifts from impressionistic caricatures to exquisitely rendered painterly miniatures. From School Library Journal

Grade 10 Up–Campbell has penned a postmodern volume about an investigation into his own mysterious disappearance. The gorgeously produced pages blend photographs, type, real and fake comic strips, autobiographical anecdotes, and musings about the nature of fiction and humor into a marvelous rumination on writerly inspiration and family dynamics. Portions of the story are told from the perspective of Campbells family members, who–like the author–are also rendered as various semi-fictions, mostly in the form of the mock comic strips that stud the narrative. The technical production of this book and the risks the author has taken in expanding his visual vocabulary and storytelling techniques are great fun, but the investigation sequence ultimately disappoints. However, Campbells continuing conversations about the nature and possibilities of sequential art are as enjoyable as they are effectively rendered. The volume ends with an interpretation of O. Henrys The Confessions of a Humorist, with Campbell casting himself as the storys protagonist. This does an excellent job of summing up or echoing many of the concepts about fiction and funnies that Campbell explores in the previous pages. It is also an artful adaptation and a satisfying and coherent close to the scattered but well-intentioned series of musings that precede it. Charming and beautiful, the book might just be slightly too rarefied and abstract for average readers, but it is a superlative example of the scope and potential of the form.–Benjamin Russell, The Derryfield School, Manchester, NH

5.0 out of 5 stars Brave Memoir Nov 29 2010
Format:Hardcover
I loved this book. Portia is brutally open and honest and the subject matter of struggling with anorexia and bulimia is very difficult and disturbing. At times I was very shocked at how severe her obsession was with being thin and the extreme measures she took to get there. It is well written and I often found myself reading late into the night to find out how she got out of such a dark place. It is a story that made me very sad to read, but also brings hope and enlightenment as she finds her way out and is now living a happy and loving life. I commend Portia for sharing such a personal journey and think anyone that struggles with self esteem and body issues should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars "A Story of Loss and Gain" -- indeed July 9 2012
By Liana TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I don't often read books written by celebrities. Most times, they are too stylized and over-indulgent -- much like Hollywood itself -- and when you do finally find an auto-biography or memoir that seems to strip away the glitz and glamour, you're disappointed to find out that not all of it is true, and much of the story was detailed by a ghost writer.

"Unbearable Lightness" immediately sets itself apart from the crowd. It does not glamorize its writer or her life, or even Hollywood in general. You easily forget it's even written by a well-known actress, a famous celebrity. This book chronicles how its writer was, for the longest time, fighting a losing battle with her own demons, and whether you can relate to the issues that are dealt with in this novel or not, it will prove to be something of substance over style.

Born in her native Australia, you see how one little girl was thrust into the modelling industry at a young age -- an industry which prizes the thin, the beautiful, the perfect. It was then that young Amanda Lee Rogers realised that if she was ever to fit in, she would have to lose weight. Her waist was too big, her thighs too fat. Her face was too round, and her eyes spaced too far apart. Her name didn't have that certain "ring" to it.

Out of this came Portia de Rossi, a successful law student who moved to Hollywood to pursue a lifelong acting career. Once there, she landed a role on the popular show "Ally McBeal", where she soon realised that things weren't as glossy as they appeared on the television screen or on the pages of a tabloid magazine. She also came face to face with her worst fear: that she was too big to fit into her wardrobe.

Thus enters the reader into a downward spiral of yo-yo dieting, sessions of binging and purging, and extreme calorie restriction. From eating no more than 300 calories a day, to eating only with chopsticks and out of the same bowl with the crack down the centre to measure precise portions, to running up and down the six flights of stairs in her apartment building to burn off 60 calories of gum, the eating and exercise habits/rituals that de Rossi would put her body through become intense and harrowing to read.

Perhaps what sets this book apart the most, when talking of novels written by celebrities, is how there is no way to skip over the truth on this story; there is no way to hide from the evidence of how sick she really was, as documented by several pictures near the end of the book, each one scarier and harder to look at than the last.

Portia de Rossi proves to have the soul of a poet with this book, each sentence finely crafted and flowing beautifully. She also puts her skills to good use by writing a book as important as this, since so few people in her position are willing to be as open, honest, and vulnerable as she is about her struggles with both her disordered eating and body image issues, as well as her sexual orientation. It's something that will hopefully help many others who are going through the same situation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfied May 19 2013

The book was in pretty good condition, exactly as described on the posting. The story itself - amazing. She is totally exposing her self - it leaves her thoughts completely naked and vulnerable, letting everyone in on her struggles. It's hard to find people out there to connect to in this way. I believe everyone has struggles in their life but majority of people don't share that deepest part of them self because they feel that it's shameful, embarrassing. What they need to understand is that it's good to share those thoughts because just saying it out loud helps that person heal and it creates awareness for the people that arent aware such issues exist. It also lets others struggling with the same issue know that they're not alone. Just a great book.
