An impressively researched exploration of dozens of never-realized architectural and master-planning projects intended for the city … Ideally, this book will give necessary perspective to the bureaucrats, planners, and architects who contribute to the evolving form of the city. One hopes that Unbuilt Toronto will inspire a sustained collective vision that will ameliorate a Toronto that at times seems more than an amateurish aggregation of merely “good-enough” interventions.
(Canadian Architect )Unbuilt Toronto explores never-realized building projects in and around Toronto, from the city’s founding to the twenty-first century. Delving into unfulfilled and largely forgotten visions for grand public buildings, landmark skyscrapers, highways, subways, and arts and recreation venues, it outlines such ambitious schemes as St. Alban's Cathedral, the Queen subway line and early city plans that would have resulted in a Paris-by-the-Lake.
Readers may lament the loss of some projects (such as the Eaton’s College Street tower), be thankful for the disappearance of others (a highway through the Annex), and marvel at the downtown that could have been (with underground roads and walkways in the sky).
Featuring 147 photographs and illustrations, many never before published, Unbuilt Toronto casts a different light on a city you thought you knew.

Unbuilt Toronto is a book that I've read several times since its publication in 2008. The writing style has a charm and energy about it that propels the reader through a landscape that does not exist, but in the writing, is very much alive. The illustrations are a fine addition to each chapter. Each time I read a section, I find another detail that brings the story of these proposals to life. I look forward to reading new works by the author.

This book was really great to read. I learned a lot about Toronto that I otherwise would have never known. It was like finding gems of information. What I really found surprising were the plans for the North York Centre, including the different plans for the CN Tower and complex. The different ROM plans were cool to see. I think we're lucky to get what we got after seeing the runners up. Also, all of the waterfront plans were awesome. I really liked seeing the different ideas for townhouses out in the water, like Harbour City and Project Toronto. Oh, and all of the archival pictures were great to see. It really brought the ideas to life.

What Could Have Been of What Little is Shown.,

I wished there were more pictures after I finished flipping through the book. There are a lot of interesting pictures, mostly from the city's archives, and much of it from the 1950's-70's. Urban projects. My favourite was comparing architectural models of the present City Hall. There must have been more 'what if's' like that in the vaults : the Reference Library, Skydome, the Railway Lands, the Exhibition Grounds, the new opera house, the ROM's new addition and long ago projects. What would the Don Jail have looked like if they had alternate plans back in the 1850's, for instance. What would have stood on Old Fort York had the fort not been spared? Would Yonge Street have been designed to look more like University Avenue? Would the subway system have gone where it has gone? (Whoops! That is in the book.) What about the amalgamated parts of the new 'megacity'? Or the parts outside the downtown core? They aren't there. But what is there in the book, and what could have been in the downtown, is interesting to see. No colour illustrations, though.
