For a while there, Canadian Idol contestant Rex Goudie seemed destined to live out the adage "always the bridesmaid, never the bride." In September 2005, Goudie took second place behind Idol winner Melissa O'Neil, then in early December released his first CD, Under The Lights, three weeks after O'Neil's debut single "Alive" hit radio and video with a bang. Truth is, Goudie's good looks and charm didn't hurt his appeal on the show, but when it comes to vocal strength and star quality, O'Neil wins that competition hands down. That said, the Newfoundland native entered the Neilson Album charts at a higher position than the Idol winner, proving that his trademark 'wrought rock' style resonates with a respectable number of Canadian fans. The success of the CD's kickoff single--an emo-waltz entitled "Run"--makes it clear just where Rex's success will most likely be found: smack dab in the arms of the teenage girls that voted for him on the show. As a result, almost half of the tracks are ballads. That said, the highlight of Under The Lights is a cover of Brad Paisley's "Whisky Lullaby," a country duet with the aforementioned O'Neil that hints at Goudie's ability to appeal to a variety of fans, from teens to lovers of traditional acoustic and beyond. There are some notable up-tempo tracks as well, including the Beatles-esque "Lie Awake" and also "Who I Am," which shows Goudie's full vocal range in the straight-ahead rock genre, the style he's clearly most suited for. --Denise Sheppard

5.0 out of 5 stars Honest, Soulful, True -- (Impressive), Dec 29 2005

I highly recommend this album.

Rex Goudie's debut album entered the National album charts at #5 for the number of CD's sold in his first week. That's quite an accomplishment for a debut album.

I am not part of the teen demographic that has been mentioned so often. I'm a 30-something year old male fan and I believe Rex's album is incredibly well done. It's one of the few CD's that I play from start to finish and enjoy each track.

His target demographic is much larger and further reaching than most of the media have been reporting.

The performances are touching and Goudie emotes very well, especially in "Call Your Name", "Strong Enough", "Who I Am", and "Stay". The tracks "Run" and "Drive" seem to be produced quite well for radio airplay.

The lyrics are another strong factor. Goudie co-wrote four of the tracks (5,6,8,12). It's evident when you hear him sing, that he connects with the lyrics, and you feel what he is conveying.

His sound, style, and voice are distinguishable and unique. When you hear him on the radio, you instantly know it's Rex, and, that is a *very good thing*. It's refreshing to have this artist in today's flooded music market.

From his raspy rocker style tunes to his slower laid back tunes, there's something for everyone. Rex stays true to himself and this album is good representation of what's very important to him.

This is just the beginning for Rex and I look forward to more of his sold-out concerts and his next CD.

Go on ... buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good., Feb 2 2006

I was overall really impressed with this cd. When I heard 30 second clips of each song, I didn't really get my hopes up, but after listening to the whole cd, I found myself loving almost all of the songs. The best ones have to be strong enough, call your name, drive and break the silence. 3 of those 4 I mentioned were written by Rex. There were a couple songs that took me a little while to warm up to- You alone, write it in lighting, and one true summer night, but now I find myself singing along to these as well. Overall- good cd, would recommend it to anyone who likes pop-rock, soft rock, or even country.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWSOME CD, Dec 18 2005

This review is from: Under The Lights (Audio CD)
I am a male of 23 years old, and while many people assumed Rex only had teenage girl fans, they were dead wrong. I had a chance to attend Rex cd release and I was in awe of how much he has improved from on Canadian Idol. In the meantime I believe he was an awsome performer and singer on there as well. From the first song on his cd to the last I was blown away. Each and every individual song was put together so well and the fact that he co-wrote 4 of the songs on the cd says alot about him. Many artists do eventually write theyre own music at some point, but it takes them a long time and the fact that Rex did this on his first cd is amazing. His song stay sends such shivers through by body and you can sense the emotion in the lyrics of the song, his debut single run is pure and real, honestly the cd is a must buy and I would reccomend it to anyone.
