Touching and Thought Provoking,
By A Customer
This review is from: Under the Piano (DVD)
Under the Piano is a unique treasure. The film takes place in the 1940's and tells the story of a young woman, Franny and her sister, Rose who is autistic. Both women live in the family home with their mother, who is emotionally unavailable and fails to see the obvious talent and intelligence Rose has. She tells Franny over and over not to expect much of Rose, as she will never improve and never accomplish anything. Nevertheless, Franny works tirelessly with Rose, who struggles socially and has severe behavioural problems.Amanda Plummer and Megan Follows provide oscar-worthy performances with emotional depth yet to be matched. Follows provides an excellent illustration of autism, complete with mannerisms and lack of intonation. Both women appear to have spent countless hours researching these difficult roles and are extremely convincing. This story is wonderful on so many levels. For parents and families of children with disabilities, this film is encouraging and shows the triumph of the human spirit. On another level, it also shows the pain family members often feel as they struggle to support someone with a disability. Even those untouched by disability will enjoy this film. Overlooked by many, Under the Piano rivals Rain Man in its touching display of family dynamics and life with a disability.

This Canadian film is at once harrowing and inspiring. "Entertaining" would not describe it, but it is gripping, and superbly acted.Megan Follows, the actress from "Anne of Green Gables," gives a riveting performance as the (adult) autistic "Rose." Amanda Plummer, as her devoted sister, Francesca, is the angel of this otherwise bleak tale of missed opportunity and destructive family behavior. Apart from the occasional reference to a location in Canada or a glimpse of Quebec licence plate, this would pass as an American film. Unfortunate, considering the acting and technical talent that Canada has contributed to American cinema. One complaint on the technical feature of the DVD: It's impossible to skip to the main menu during the trailers, which occupy the first five minutes of the disc. This is a not uncommon practice, but one which I find both inconvenient and tasteless. Nonetheless, this film is worth the brief wait.

Megan Follows shines as Rosie,

This review is from: Under the Piano (DVD)
All too often Canadian movies get left in the dust. They are usually hard to get and don't usually receive the credit they so deserve. This movie, UNDER THE PIANO, featured Megan Follows (an actor who has turned out brilliant performances since she was a child) and Amanda Plumber (yes Christopher's daughter) who is equally as wonderful. This was a thought provoking and often-times difficult to watch movie and a movie that dealt with the human condition. Movies like this tend to get looked over for the Hollywood movies but do deserve our attention. There is so much talent in Canada and Amazon has the means to promote it. Low keyed and deeply saddening,
By Kenneth Wolman - Published on Amazon.com
Any opera person will buy this neglected film for Teresa Stratas in a speaking role, and she does not disappoint. Where Stratas had a huge career, her character in the film is a never-was prima donna turned captious voice teacher and utterly failed mother whose rigidity drives one child away and another--a deeply autistic daughter--to attempt suicide. It is not a fun topic and it is not a fun movie, but a sad portrait of a family that cannot quite assemble itself to support its weakest OR its strongest links. Amanda Plummer is quite fine as the elder daughter, and Megan Follows is scarily real as the autistic girl. Hard to say "wonderful" about a film as sad as this, but there it is.

Wonderful!,

I have had this movie on VHS for many years and was happy to see it released to DVD. Megan Follows of Anne of Green Gables fame does an excellent job in this moving story of survival, love vs. hate, strength, and shattered dreams. A pretty heavy story, this movie (I feel) is a great time piece that captures a moment in the past very well with the set, costumes, cars etc. My favorite scene is when Megan Follows is riding the food cart at her job - a moment of true bliss for this troubled soul. Great movie. I can watch it again and again.
