Product Description

From Amazon.com

Rise up, pop-punk fans, and salute Sum 41: With Blink-182 broken up and Good Charlotte going for a rock vibe, the boys from Ontario stand a chance at reinvigorating the entire stalled subgenre. Not just because the competition has thinned, but because Underclass Hero is just that great. Though nobody would accuse lead singer Deryck Whibley of sounding like Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong, he bites into the politically charged lyrics that course through this 14-track set as hard: "March of the Dogs," "The Jester," and "Confusion and Frustration in Modern Times" are served up with a spasmodic sneer (and, in the case of the latter, a lyric that will resonate with legions of the exasperated: "Confusion's all I see/Frustration surrounds me/Solution's bid farewell/Sedation? What the hell"), and the title track comes bounding out of stereo speakers with both outrage and lit-up energy. On the lighter side, the ballad "With Me" is sweet and simple enough to recall Plain White Ts, and "Ma Poubelle," a French ditty, strikes a weird Beatle-y chord before rapidly dissolving. Does Sum 41 add up to the hottest pop-punk band going, then? For sure. Do the math. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Underclass Hero marks a step in a bold new direction for the group, whose three full length album's, 2001's All Killer, No Filler, 2002's, Does this Look Infected and 2004 Chuck have sold over 7 million units worldwide. 'You Can't help buy grow a little', says Whibley about the band's musical and lyrical maturity. 'We now see the artistic side of music. We wanted to make this the most artistic punk-rock record we could. We approach music differently now. Things now have a purpose. We care about the craft of it now.' The is Sum 41, better than ever...and this time no regrets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something No Other Punk Band Does Right... Grow Up, Oct 31 2007
By
R. Gebert "GeeB" (Vancouver Island, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Underclass Hero (Audio CD)
This album is a really good album, period.
I saw a guy bashing it earlier saying it doesn't reach teenagers like it should, well with exception to the song Underclass Hero this album is not about that.
These 3 guys are all married, actually I think either Cone or Stevo is only in a long term relationship and not married yet, all over 25, and all too damn old to keep making songs like In Too Deep, Fat Lip, ect. (ALTHOUGH THOSE SONGS ARE AWESOME TOO!!)
I'm 22 and have been a Sum fan since I heard 'Makes No Difference' on the radio and spent my monthly allowance to go buy the CD, and these guys have never disappointed with any album since as I own them all.
INFACT they have done something other punk bands have a horrible time with, which is growing WITH their fans. Where-as even the "great" Green Day had to flop 2 albums before they realized their fan base was now about 25 and wanted something more mature then Minority :P
These guys, and Derik in particular as he wrote all the songs with Stevo helping on a couple, have hit the perfect balance between songs with punk and meaning in them.

My favs are...
Speak Of The Devil - Brilliant Song, ups-downs, and alot of hidden meanings me thinks ;)
Count Your Last Blessings - Wasn't a HUGE fan of Chuck, although I went to see them when they toured for it, but this song shows they still have that political side to them and can do it without trying to be metal.
Best Of Me - Such a good, honest, deep song. Can't knock a band for finally having a slow song pouring their hearts out after 4 albums of punk, can't be all punk all the time ;)
Walking Disaster - I think anyone who looked forward to moving out after highschool can relate to this song, also I like the unusual opening :P
Underclass Hero - Good song, good punk feel, with a little more maturity. Only knock is the video looks and feels exactly like Fat Lip, hope these guys don't start being like Eminem where the first video off every album looks the exact same with a couple minor changes :P
Confusion & Frustration... - Same, just a good punkish song :)

All in all if you wanna hear Sum 41 at where they are now buy this, if you want to hear more of a straight punk sound get their older stuff.

My only warning to everyone is that I went and saw these guys in 2004/2005 and they were great but it seemed Dave Brownsound (left the band prior to this album) really carried the gituar in the live performances, so unless they are picking someone up to play live with them it might not be that great of a show...

But as far as this album goes I'll gladly buy the next one without even listening to it before hand after how great this one was ;)

3.0 out of 5 stars surprislingly its an alright album, Oct 21 2007

This review is from: Underclass Hero (Audio CD)
when i heard dave "brownsound" baksh left the band and sum41 was making a new album the first thing that came into my head was "this album is gunna be horrible!" but sum 41 surprised me and made a decent album without brownsound. now this cd is no "does this look infected" but its listinable and sum41 deserves alot of credit if most bands lost there lead guitarest that made them big they woulda fade off and just give up but not sum41 they fought hard to make this album as best as they could with the departure of mr.baksh. so support this cd its a good "brownsoundless album"

1.0 out of 5 stars I must not be a fan., Sep 29 2007
This review is from: Underclass Hero (Audio CD)
I know that I'm outnumbered in this situation but I seriosly think this band is untalented. I find them annoying and I find they have little to offfer. Period. The music is just bad and the guys making it are just etheir complaining or telling other people to go away. Mabye thats why the music is so bad. They want us to stay away from it.

The lyrics suck, the music is bad and the guy singing has two kinds of annoying voices: Fast, in your face and annoying and slow, whiney and annoying.

They think they can reach teenagers with this music but I'm a teenager and I don't like them at all. They think that some of their songs are hard rock/ metal but it isn't. No where near it.

So in other words if you like them its fine. Some people do and I am fine with that. But I don't.
