Confusing and inconclusive,
By Foodcoach (Toronto, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Understanding the Messages of Your Body: How to Interpret Physical and Emotional Signals to Achieve Optimal Health (Paperback)
I am a health practitioner who has respect for the osteopathic profession, and purchased this book hoping that some insightful links between fascia, organ systems and the energy network would be imparted from a scientific perspective. The author, Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral has an impressive osteopathic profile listed on the back of the book and as a teacher, clinician and director of his own school, I assumed there would be some 'aha' moments.Well I was wrong. I could barely make my way thru this book because it either stated the obvious or was confusing. Some of it, I suspect, is due to it being written by a person whose primary language is not English. But it seems to go beyond that - there is an absence of ordered thought and scientific or clinical analysis. The book is also filled with weak metaphors. Having said that, I get that Dr. Barral has good intentions. The direction that he is taking the book is a correct one, in that emotions and the organ systems are connected, and each is affected by the other. For someone who is a beginner in understanding the mind/body connection, this book can offer some insight. But don't let your learning end here. There are so many books to explore in that arena that are better written. Caroline Myss's Anatomy of the Spirit Anatomy of the Spirit, although coming at it from a different angle (medical intuitive vs. osteopathic) is more of a classic. If you are a professional in the health field, skip this book.

The innovative doctor and author, who is probably better known for his textbooks on Visceral Manipulation, has written this book in easy-to-read simple terms for everyone. And what an eye-opener it is. I learned a lot in terms of connectivity and how certain symptoms actually relate to specific organs. It's written with a global perspective on healing the human body (as opposed to restrictive North American training), and offers various avenues of guidance. Having been treated with Visceral Manipulation therapy and seen positive results, I also like that this book helps explain the foundation for the methodology. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the "how's and why's" of body function, as well as the basis for personal self-healing.

This is a GREAT companion book for body workers, especially those practicing any type of visceral work. Very simple language, easily readable by the layperson. Great insights and tips based on Barral's experience and studies for physical and emotional health. Highly recommended.

This review is from: Understanding the Messages of Your Body: How to Interpret Physical and Emotional Signals to Achieve Optimal Health (Paperback)
I am a physical therapist with 3 years studies in osteopathic medicine. My background dictated higher expectations from this book. At best, this book is ment for a lay person with some curiosity as to how the body responds to emotional strains, with a focus from organ to organ. It is basic in its concepts and basic in its connections with nutrition and other therapies. The stories Dr. Barral gives are interesting in seeing the connection between emotion and organ involved. Even as a lay person, however, one can see the conflicts and inconsistencies in the information presented. For example, the same emotions affect different organs, it appears. The scope Dr. Barral wanted to cover in this book is overwhelming and some things cannot be simplified and presented in a concise manner. Dr. Barral is a seasoned clinicial with deep, rooted wisdom and I was hoping to get more of those pearls of wisdom in this book.

This book put into words something we all sense, but are not able to define. As I read through this book I identified myself, friends, and family. It has enabled me to take better care of what my body needs and suggest things to others I love. It has opened up a while new world to me!
