I bought Undertown back when it was first released in 2007 just because of the interesting premise: a boy's father falls gravely ill so the boy embarks on a journey through an alternate world called Undertown to find an object called the Sugar Stone, which he believes can help his father. The idea is very original and in manga-form the story really comes together well. The characters in the book are also insanely charming - Sama, the main hero of the story who mirrors us when we were his age; Eddie, his fast-talking and witty teddy bear; Joey P.P., a porcupine-guy with a serious attitude; and so much more. This fantastic ensemble of characters really propel the story along and you want to follow them as Sama makes his journey through a world he thought at first was a place of happiness and joy but finds that it's actually a dark wasteland torn apart by civil war and evil forces. What's surprising about the kid-friendly facade is how mature the themes are in the book, dealing with death, deception, and betrayal without really letting up, creating the perfect subliminal mirror image of how when we're young the world is innocent but when we get out there we discover the harsh reality of it all. Not only is Undertown one of the best graphic novels I've ever read, it's also one of the most heartfelt and personal stories anyone anywhere will ever find in a book of this medium.

I just read half of the book, It was good for the most part. It is about a kid who is about to loose his father who has a heart problem and needs a transplant to become better. The kid hears about a wonderful town called Undertown. And is told there is something called a suger stone that will help his father at the town. So the kid does what any kid in these manga books, he goes to Undertown and find out it's crawling with bugs trying to take over the town and there are people in hiding. It's good book, it shows friendship and how a kid can make a difference. I hope to get more books later in the future. It seems like this is the first book out of it's series. I hope for it took come out with more.

I bought this book at a yard sale today. I just finished it. I would have given it more stars, if it were a standalone instead of an incomplete series.

The back of the book gives a good description of the book's plot, so I won't write one.
The book is well made, the artwork is good and the story flows at a good pace. It's a bit, um, well, if your getting this for your child, you might want to preview (flip through and make sure the artwork is ok; blood and such) the whole book at a library before you buy. I think it's very interesting. The plot certainly kept me entertained, and when I finished it I looked up the second book online. It's not available. I hate it when I'm interested in a book and it never gets gets an ending. At this point, I don't see much hope for it since I couldn't find anything about the next volume's availability dated within a year of today (though the writter said something about volume 3 being finished in a very recent twitter post).

So here's my advice: if you're thinking about getting this book, go to volume 2's amazon page and sign up to be notified when the next volume is available. If and when it is available, flip through the first book at the library to make sure it interests you and is suitable to you. Then buy both books to show support and hope the 3rd one makes it to the press.
