This review is from: Underworld (Hardcover)
After reading this novel, I was struck by its prescience about the state of our country and the looming terrorism unleashed by the fall of the Soviet empire. In a sense the novel is a bookend for the end of the 20th C. as Joyce's Ulysses is for the beginning of the 20th C. There are literary gems to uncover through patient reading and pondering. On pg. 137, there is a discussion with a character Marvin about the end of the cold war...(and it was written prior to 9/11/2001!)
On p. 308, the author proclaims, "the shock, the power, of an ordinary life..."!
And not to mention the final denouement for the story's protagonist Nick Shays.
Have not read a better work of fiction since I read this in 2002.
