Better action, a bit of sex, and gorier R-rated violence make Underworld: Evolution a reasonably satisfying sequel to 2003's surprise hit Underworld. Looking stunning as ever in her black leather battle gear, Kate Beckinsale is every goth guy's fantasy as Selene, the vampire "death dealer" who's now fighting to stop the release of the original "Lycan" werewolf, William (Brian Steele) from the prison that's held him for centuries. As we learn from the film's action-packed prologue, William and his brother Marcus (Tony Curran) began the bloodline of vampires and werewolves, and after witnessing centuries of warfare between them, their immortal father Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) now seeks Selene and the human vampire/lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) to put an end to the war perpetuated by Victor (Bill Nighy), the vampire warrior whose betrayal of Selene turns Underworld: Evolution into an epic tale of familial revenge. This ambitious attempt at Shakespearean horror is compromised by a script (by Danny McBride and returning director Len Wiseman, Beckinsale's real-life husband) that's more confusing than it needs to be, with too many characters and not enough storytelling detail to flesh them all out. Aspiring to greatness and falling well short of that goal, Underworld: Evolution succeeds instead as a full-throttle action/horror thriller, with enough swordplay, gunplay, and CGI monsters to justify the continuation of the Underworld franchise. If you're an established fan, this is a must-see movie; if not, well... at least it's better than Van Helsing. --Jeff Shannon
On the DVD
The features of the Underworld: Evolution DVD are pretty similar to the first Underworld DVD. Director Len Wiseman and his technical team combine for a commentary track that discusses how they "cheated" on Kate Beckinsale's action sequences, how they reused backgrounds from the first film to save money, and the difficulty of filming a love scene involving the director's wife. Over an hour of featurettes cover the story and the casting, visual effects (CGI, props, and miniatures), stunts, production design, music, and sound effects. Wiseman also mentions in his commentary that there are more bits and pieces of the story to reveal "if an extended edition [comes] out." Considering Underworld was released four times on DVD, another release of Underworld: Evolution would seem to be almost a foregone conclusion. --David Horiuchi

Once bitten - you'll want even more,

For those of you (or should I say "us") who really got into Kate Beckinsale's azz-kicking gory days in Underworld, here's your chance for more of the same. Even though three years have passed in our time, Evolution takes up right where the first movie ended, but thanks to the magic of flashbacks we get some more background info on the blood feud and how it all began.
Way, way back, Alexander Corvinus had two sons, Marcus (Tony Curran) and William. The first was bitten by a bat and became a Death Dealer with the fangs to prove it, and the second was bitten by a wolf to become the forefather and prototype for the Lycans who get all furry and howl at the sight of a full moon. William however, was unable to control his blood lust, and made quite a nuisance of himself, until he was hunted down and locked away forever, much to Marcus's dismay and anger. Having been double crossed by Viktor (Bill Nighy), Marcus is out for revenge, and of course for blood. Back to present day, the war between Vampire and Lycan continues, and Marcus is awakened with some new tricks up his wings and a burning desire to set William free. Standing in his way is Selene, the hottest vampire action heroine in recent movie history (Beckinsale naturally) and her trusty sidekick Michael the hybrid (Scott Speedman). Between them they unknowingly hold the key and the map to William's prison, and soon find themselves in Marcus's sights. In between the fighting and hiding from the sun and such activities, the two leading characters manage to squeeze in a little nookie time, which of course provides some eye-candy for us the viewers with its strategic placement between all the carnage. The story line is a bit confusing if you haven't been making notes, and don't ever ask Selene her age, but as far as action, CGI and drama goes, this one is a non-stop thrill. Recommended for vampire lovers and blood suckers everywhere. Amanda Richards

Great storey line loved it,just sooooo much gore and violence. This was probably the best for it's story in the series but the worst for gore.

Underworld took the world by storm as a much more action packed Vampire versus Werewolf film. Kate Beckensale is awesome as Serena, an avid hunter and killer of werewolves. She is the center and anchor for the entire series, which now numbers three. I have the first in Bluray, which tempted me into buying this, the second installment, also in Bluray. When Rise of the Lycans comes down in price, I will buy it also. This is simply one of the best Vampire movies that I have seen, albeit a bit dark. This is corrected by being Bluray, which does not change the darkness, but increases the clarity to a point that perfectly visible scenes are possible. Now the darkness of the movie does not hide, but simply enhances the viewers immersion into the film. A must for Vampire fans - all three installments.
