I'm very happy with this purchase. It's an entertaining vampire series with lots of action and a teenie bit of romance thrown in (if you want more vampire romance, try the series Moonlight). Except for a small cameo at the end, Rise of the Lycans did not have Kate Beckinsale (Selene), Scott Speedman (Michael Corvin), or Shane Brolly (Kraven).

This product is in widescreen format, a fact that is not (at the time of this writing) mentioned in the description.

The product packaging could use a little upgrade - all three discs are placed on top of each other on one spindle. A tip: place the case on a firm surface before trying to remove a disc - it's easier.

There is a character arc in the story of Selene that reminds me of Max Guevera (portrayed by Jessica Alba) in the TV series Dark Angel. Max starts off as a minor player among the transgenics, but eventually rises to become their leader (aptly depicted in the Max Allan Collins novels that continue the story). Both women are soldiers, warriors. Of course, Selene never sought the low-profile that Max did at the start of Dark Angel. She was simply too brash, too head-strong. As Underworld begins, Selene is neither an elder nor a member of the ruling council. She is essentially a secondary character in the vampire hierarchy. And this is what makes the story fascinating. By the end of Awakening, Selene has attained an almost legendary status. She is perhaps the last surviving member of the "old school", and the last direct link to the "Old Guard". Viktor, Marcus, Amelia, Lucien...all of them have perished. Her meeting with Alexander Corvinus in Evolution is pivotal. What does he call her? "The Future". Is this not prescient? In Awakening, after so many covens have been decimated or destroyed by "the purge", the younger generation (represented by David/Theo James) is desperately looking for a new leader. Selene offers them that hope, that inspiration. But as their new leader, her perspective differs greatly from that of Viktor or Marcus. They were overbearing and cruel, intolerant of dissent. Selene is much more "modern". Her relationship with Michael Corvin, being a mother...these experiences have transformed her. The question is, who will she become? Can she move beyond her past as a "death-dealer", the centuries of violence and killing? Surely, brute force and brutality can not be a long-term strategy. As for Kate Beckinsale, I have no doubt that this is the role she was born to play. I long to see her return for an encore. They should do whatever it takes to coax her back.

The Underworld Trilogy is a stylized, action-packed sci-fi/fantasy series. It is dark but contains a sweet romantic thread in the storyline. Selene is a beautiful vampire who is fighting to save her centuries old culture from annihilation by werewolves, who have evolved alongside but never together, with them. At least, that is what we are led to believe. When the truth finally emerges, Selene is forced to accept that nothing is as it seems and it never has been!
