This set of 8 texts is the perfect match for the educator that is beginning or has implemented the writer's workshop model in their classroom.

Lucy Calkins and her co-authors provide the philosophy along with the practice. Each unit of study provides the facilator with explicit mini-lessons with ways to extend them into small shared writing lessons with specific groups of students that need extra support. Comes with a CD-ROM that provides blankline masters as well as video clips. This is a must have for any writer's workshop classroom!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use Oct 9 2011
I started using this unit last year, it is an easy read and easy to follow with basic lesson plans that can be implemented quickly. The results are great! The school has one copy, many teachers, so I bought my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Showed me how to teach writing May 14 2006
By M. Smith - Published on Amazon.com
I have taught 2nd grade for 5 years. The first three years my district did not have a "set" writing curriculum. We used 6-traits, but the structured limits of that way of thinking did not help make me a good writing teacher. Those three years I tried my best to teach writing with the limited experience of writing myself. Two years ago we addapted the Lucy Calkins series. These books have changed the way I see writing and how I teach it.

Each book takes you through the steps of the understanding the thinking behind writing. Each book has actual lesson plans--giving you solid examples of how to teach the lesson. The books have helped me to see writing in a different, more flexible, approach.

I will say that the books are, for the most part, focused on K-1. But that being said, it is easily adaptable for 2nd grade.

I HIGLY recommend this writing series. In fact, I am going to teach 3rd grade next year and can not wait to read the new 3-5 series that Lucy Calkins has!!
