4.0 out of 5 stars Ok, Aug 17 2000
This review is from: The Unlikely Angel (Paperback)
This book, while not as enjoyable as some of Ms. Krahn's others, was still a good read. It seemed that both lead characters had a lot of depth but their relationship with each other was lacking. They were always arguing with each other and then all of a sudden fell in love. It was hard to believe but then this is a romance novel so there is room for the unbelievable. I still recommend this book but if you want to read some of Krahn's best, read The Last Bachelor or The Princess and the Barbarian.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical historical romance, but..., April 1 2005
By Laura Harris - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Unlikely Angel (Paperback)
After the first few pages, I realized this book was not going to be a typical historical romance. Instead of focusing on two nobles and their play in high society, this novel's action took place almost entirely in the Chancery courts and the country. While I enjoyed this refreshing change of focus, I agree with the other reviewer who suggested that the emotional attachment between Madeline and Cole was a bit unbelievable; while Krahn did spend time developing their relationship, I don't think it was quite enough.

Bottom line: while I enjoyed this book, I probably won't be rereading it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Heavy on history and political detail, very low on romance, Mar 6 2006
By Gemma "bookworm" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Unlikely Angel (Paperback)
I have to say that my thoughts on this book are exactly what my thoughts were on another work by this author, 'Sweet Talking Man'. I felt like the political/historical part of this novel was the main focus of the book, with a romance sort of tacked on. There wasn't any real chemistry between the characters, and the author never really made it clear why they should fall in love with one another. That magic 'spark' that makes a romance work just wasn't there.

After being bored by two of this author's books, I don't think I'll be trying another. It seems that historical/political plots with a back-burner love story are pretending to be romance novels when they're not. If you're looking for a moving love story, this isn't it.
