Gia (Unrated) (DVD)

There's a reason why Cindy Crawford was dubbed "Baby Gia" when she first hit the modeling scene. Indeed, Crawford, now the world's best-known supermodel, greatly resembled model Gia Carangi, who went from high school to the cover of British Vogue in less than two years. Carangi appeared on many more covers of Vogue (French, British, Italian, and American) and Cosmopolitan before dying of complications from AIDs (she was an IV heroin user) in 1986. Now most people recognize Carangi's name from this powerful HBO film that stars Golden Globe-winner Angelina Jolie, who comes by her talent honestly. Jolie is the daughter of veteran actor Jon Voight, and her own training as a model serves her well--she has the moves. Throughout, she's heartbreaking--as no doubt the real Carangi was--effective, and stunning.

With good source material (Stephen Fried's A Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia), Jolie's stunning performance, and strong directing by Michael Cristofer, the movie goes beyond the merely sensational. The script was cowritten by Cristofer and novelist Jay McInerney, whose Bright Lights, Big City covers similar territory. As a cautionary tale, Gia works. But to watch Jolie in her character's tragic self-destruction is utterly compelling. --N.F. Mendoza --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Here's what you probably want to know... June 18 2004
By Deckard
1. You want to buy it, so get the unrated version, rather
than the 'R' rated one, cos it has more nudity.
2. Angelina Jolie is a total knock-out in this film.
3. Yes, she does get naked - quite a bit in fact.
4. Yes, there's a 'scene' with another girl.
5. There's one stand out line in this film from Angelina: "'I gotta go', 'I gotta go'. Where the #### does everyone go when they've gotta go?"
6. Great movie, you will definitely want this if you're a fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable and Heartwrenching April 21 2000
I was maybe ten when Gia died. Needless to say I had never heard of her when this movie came out. But being a huge fan of Angelina Jolie I watched it. After it was over I just sat there thinking (a sign of a very good movie in my opinion). I had run the gamet of every emotion possible in just two hours. I felt like I had just met someone quite amazing and they told me their life story. Angelina Jolie has proven herself in the past as an amazing actress, but this film established her as a master of the craft. No one could have come close to the power she radiates while showing us who Gia was. I don't say "plays Gia" because it was definitly more than portraying a character. She became Gia. I hate when people categorize this movie as "lesbian/ gay film", because it generalizes a very complex emotional human being. Gia wasn't just a lesbian, she was a model, a friend, a daughter, and a lover. If you want to experience the human condition, it's joy and pain, watch Gia. It truly is a work of art. And Angelina Jolie is an artist.

2.0 out of 5 stars good film, lame DVD Sept. 9 2002
The 2-star rating of this DVD refers not to the content of the film - I mean, an oft-naked Angelina Jolie playing a supermodel lesbian junkie, what could be more entertaining? - but to the DVD itself. First, the film was made for TV, so the aspect ratio is the same for the video release and the disc, and the quality is exactly the same. Second, there are virtually no extra features save for a photo gallery of model shots in the film, the usual cast and crew bios which are easily accessible at the Internet Movie Database, and language selection. I was at least expecting a making of documentary or interview or commentary or SOMETHING. While having chapter selection makes skipping to wonderful scenes like Gia's test photo shoot, her first encounter with Linda and the "I do be the pittiest girl" studio 54 scene with Jolie snorting coke and Dancing With Myself on the soundtrack easier, there are only 15 univentively titled chapters, which for a 2 hour movie is not a whole lot. Lastly, and most importantly, this is not the unrated version of the film!! You are missing 6 full minutes of nudity and Angelina Jolie-style lesbian love in this version. I recommend getting the unrated video instead and skipping the DVD or for you fanatics, investing in both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rapid rise to and Tragic fall from stardom March 3 2000
The story of the first American supermodel, Gia Carangi, is one that moves you beyond anything you can imagine. To see the down-and-out pizza joint girl rise from nothingness in Philadelphia to everything around the world and back is something that cannot be believed unless it is seen. Angelina Jolie carries this role in such a way that you couldn't possibly finish this movie without being disturbed, horrified, and moved nearly to tears by its tragic ending. Perhaps Carangi wasn't something of amazing talent, but Jolie certainly is and her depiction of the drug-riddled model certainly deserved every award and ounce of critical acclaim that she received. Without question, purchase this movie and watch it many times. I promise this much: you will never look at Jolie the same way again, you will NEVER see Carangi in the same light as previously, and you will never EVER touch another drug again in your entire life.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Blu-Ray Quality is good... Aug. 4 2014
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
“There is one scene from this movie when Angelina Jolie” said to her lover, you’re the only one who’s been good
to me, that lover was played by Elizabeth Mitchell” this is not the first time she’s played a role in which she’s
making out with a woman, “I hate saying Lesbian” she did it in two others, one I know is E.R. the other can’t remember,
but back to what she said, after putting the girl through hell with her Drug problem. to say that, I think was very selfish,
the girl had a lot of mommy problems, that she so desperately need, mommy would ratter go have her flings,
than take care of her Daughter needs, or just being a mother,
“Angelina Jolie did a fantastic job portraying “Gia Carangi” the nude scene of Miss Jolie was a site to see in itself,
Portrayed to the fullest by Angelina, this will make you cry and Mad as hell, at the same time,
all because of one person giving her a pick-me-up drug, that got her hooked, people always say why don’t you stop,
if it was only that easy, no special features with this disc.
Runtime 125 Min.
English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.
This Blu-Ray Quality is good...

4.0 out of 5 stars Hello, Baby June 24 2004
Gia is a knockout, daring film. It tells the true story of the rise and fall of 80's supermodel Gia Carrangi. Many reviewers have said they never heard of Gia until the movie. In the cruel fashion world, Gia was forgotten as fast as she became famous. Not one person from the fashion industry attended her funeral. The man who wrote the book on which this film was based also coined the term 'fashionista' for his book. The word has since become a staple in the English language.
Angelina Jolie was made for this role; she deserved the awards and recognition she received for it. If this film had been made for theaters rather than HBO, she should have won an Oscar.
In Gia, Gia/Jolie is the sun, and all the other characters revolve around her. From her inauspicious beginnings in New York City to her photo shoots all over the world, Gia desperately seeks that which she was denied as a child - love. The tragedy is that once she finally finds love, Gia is so scarred emotionally and from drugs, that she is unable to accept it. Mercedes Ruel gives a masterful, subtle performance as Gia's self-centered mother who abandoned her daughter when she was 11.
The drugs, glamor, and glitz of the 80's fashion world are portrayed in both gritty and glamorous fashion. One of the most striking scenes is when Gia is dressed for a photo shoot as a geisha in a red dress. This scene is so riveting and well done I watched it a dozen times. She is standing in a gritty alley with red paper lanterns hanging over the concrete. The whole scene is surreal, and is a great portrayal of Gia's life and of the 80's.
Jolie keeps nothing inside for this performance. She is naked, both physically and emotionally. And the jazz soundtrack is captivating and mesmerizing. In fact, I am seeking to purchase just the soundtrack.

3.0 out of 5 stars not the best quality
This movie was pretty poor quality. It looked like someone recorded off of a VCR and put it on DVD. It Was somewhat disappointing to see, especially when it was a gift for a fan.
