Product Description

As the race for the leadership of Canada’s federal Liberal Party heats up, candidate Deborah Coyne has written “Unscripted”, a memoir that weaves her life-long dedication to seeking bold directions for the Canadian nation with her 15-year relationship with the late former Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau. Lawyer, university professor, constitutional activist, public servant, writer and mother of two children, Coyne’s skills and hard work have often placed her at the centre of some of the great public debates of our times. “Unscripted” candidly lays out her plan for a more inclusive style of government that will inspire Canadians to fully embrace what they can do with their ideas, talents and drive.

"My life has been a series of abrupt turns, twisted trajectories, and calculated risks."
This is a short book. Quick to read, a few interesting pictures including some with former prime minister Trudeau. It is a very fast moving autobiography of someone who has had a lot of different jobs and who did not hesitate to move on to new challenges very quickly. Does that matter? Perhaps not but it would have been interesting to see what she might have accomplished if she had stayed for a while in one or two places.
Her main focus has always been politics, liberal politics. She believes that the Liberal party needs to have a clear identity. What does it stand for, people should not be confused about that.
She has some good stories about what were, for me, largely forgotten political battles such as Meech Lake.
Would she make a good Liberal leader or Prime Minister? Most people do not seem to think that she has much chance at getting those jobs; I am inclined to agree but it was interesting to see what she had been up to and certainly Canadian politics could use more focus on serious policy issues and less on trivial issues.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Mar 31 2013

Ms. Coyne was at the nexus of old Ottawa and fills in many of the blanks about a man many admired. It's not great literature and I wish she had lifted the curtain a little higher.

A wonderful woman who might win the nomination over her former lover's son Justin. Now wouldn't that occasion
put Canada and the Liberals on front pages around the world.
I enjoyed her book, her views on the world and her life story with and without Pierre. I think you will too.
4.0 out of 5 stars Un-scripted is an apt title Feb 13 2013

Deborah Coyne's life has definitely been unscripted. She didn't hold any job for long and had a varied career. She provides new insight on her long-term relationship with Pierre Trudeau, which shows it was more than a fling.
