Soft Landings Are Best,
By StorytimeStandouts "Carolyn Hart" (British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Up An Down (Hardcover)
In Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers we meet two friends who do everything together. They enjoy making music and they love a good game of backgammon. All is well until Penguin decides that it is his destiny to fly. Without explanation to his best friend, Penguin embarks on a mission to discover the secret of flight. Boy is bereft - he can't understand his friend's sudden disappearance. It is indeed fortunate that Boy sees an advertisement for an upcoming circus performance involving a cannon and a very familiar face. Boy races to be there and to soften his friend's landing. With a lovely message about friendship and celebrating one's unique abilities, Up and Down will be thoroughly enjoyed by children aged three and up. We heart Penguins,
By Elizabeth Q. Howard "EQHL" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Up and Down (Hardcover)
This book has beautiful illustrations. The colors are rich and the characters are drawn with much humor. I really enjoy showing my son the actions that are occuring on the page that are not explained by the text. For expample, on one page the little boy is trying to describe to a owl how his penguin friend can not fly. This is shown by arrows and thought bubbles. My son is only 2 years old, but requests the Oliver Jeffers books often for bedtime. I however would consider purchasing this book for a child up to the age or 6 or 7. This story can be enjoyed by child and parent. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful

Heartwarming,

This book is an excellent follow-up to Lost and Found, where the boy and his penguin friend are introduced. It's not necessary to have read the first book to appreciate this one, but having both would be awesome for a child's personal library. Kids (and adults) will experience all the complexities and emotions that go along with friendship while the illustrations add the perfect touch. The author's message comes through crystal clear, making its way into your heart to stay.

Get Lost and Found instead,

I got this because we really liked Jeffers' Lost and Found. But this book is not as good. The illustrations are beautiful, but the story is a bit complicated and less focused, especially for younger readers. The penguin and the boy split up and it tries to tell their story in parallel, with less success ("Likewise, the boy could barely sleep for worrying about his friend."). And sometimes all the pronouns get confusing, "He looked everywhere and even thought he'd found him for a second." But we do still like this book and I don't regret buying it. |
