“A book of distinction.”—Saturday Review

“Those who follow Julie’s growth—from a tantrum-throwing seven-year-old to a gracious young woman of seventeen—will find this book has added a new dimension to their lives.”—The New York Times Book Review

--This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

Book Description

The author of Across Five Aprils and No Promises in the Wind presents one of her most beloved novels, the Newbery award-winning story of a girl’s coming of age…

Julie would remember her happy days at Aunt Cordelia’s forever. Running through the spacious rooms, singing on rainy nights in front of the fireplace. There were the rides in the woods on Peter the Great and the races with Danny Trevort. There were the precious moments alone in her room at night, gazing at the sea of stars.

But there were sad times too—the painful jealousy Julie felt after her sister married, the tragic death of a schoolmate and the bitter disappointment of her first love. Julie was having a hard time believing life was fair. But Julie would have to be fair to herself before she could even think about new beginnings…

First Sentence
Three children stood outside our gate in the bright October sunlight, silent and still as figurines in a gift shop window, watching each step I took as I came slowly down the flagstone walk across the lawn. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!!, Jun 24 2004

Julie (West Virginia) - See all my reviews
Hello my name is Julie and I am a student at West Virginia State University. I am taking a Children's Literature course where I had to read a Newbery Novel and this is the novel that I read. This story was very touching. I loved reading about Julie's growth and development. I would recommend this book to anyone but I am not sure if I would have my classroom read this book because it really would not reach every child in the room. Probably mostly the girls would relate. I would buy a copy of this book and have it on my book shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written Book, May 13 2004
Up a Road Slowly is a beautiful book. It is easy to relate to the main character, Julie Trelling, as she experiences life from the tender age of five, through her completion of high school. Julie's life is not exciting, and is quite ordinary. However, that is the beauty of the book. Irene Hunt took things that happen in everyone's life, gave them a special charm, and added a little wisdom as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I've Ever Read...., May 5 2004

"tardkitten" (Norfolk, VA United States) - See all my reviews
I've read A LOT of books, and this is one of the few I read when I was a kid and would still read today. Yes, it is that good. I first was suggested this book by my fifth grade teacher, mainly because I had gone through all the Nancy Drew books in the school library. I read this book over and over and over again. The story just keeps getting better and better. I sincerely think that even adults would enjoy reading this book, the story is so good and the characters excellently developed. Reading about Julie growing up and figuring things out made me feel a lot better about the process of growing up and how not everything goes the way you want it to, but it all works out in the end.
