This is the album where most fans agree that Curt, Cris, and Derrick came into their own as a totally original artistic force, where the intricate wordplay of Curt's heat-driven visions is finally matched by the tricky rhythmic exchanges and turbulent, trippy melodicism emanating from the instruments. When listening to songs such as the whistle-led "Maiden's Milk," the outrageously Talking Heads-funky "Away," or the giddy, rollicking "Seal Whales," it becomes almost impossible to believe that only three instruments could create such a delicate, textured record. It truly seemed that this Phoenix trio had managed to capture the sound of the desert on vinyl--the sense of echoing loneliness, the cactus prickliness, the vast open spaces. This reissue (originally released in 1985) includes five bonus eight-track demos. --Everett True

Product Description

The high watermark of their early years, "Up on the Sun" remains most Meat Puppets fans' all-time favorite. Recorded in just three days back in early 1985, the album received universal praise. For this edition, the album has been expanded to include five

Another fine album by the Meat Puppets out of the early '80s. After their fantastic MP II they released "Up On The Sun". I liked it then, and I still like it today.
Less raw than MP II and more produced, it has an almost REM "Murmur" feel to it. While MP II was hardcore meets country, "Up On The Sun" is firmly in the alternative camp.
SST released so many great albums in the early-mid 80's from Black Flag to the Minutemen and the Meat Puppets. While MP II remains my favorite album it only beats "Up On The Sun" by a hair.
Great album from a great era.

1.0 out of 5 stars very dissapointing Feb. 29 2004
By John
Format:Audio CD
I bought this record assuming the songs would be as poignant and memorable as those on II. Instead, I found the music to be busy and impersonal, and I thought the lyrics (once again in comparison to those on II) sucked. Its often said that Up on the Sun demonstrates the Meat Puppets coming into their own 'sound', and that its a vast improvement over II. I fail to see how their work on II was any less of a genuine expresssion of the bands vision than this frankly dull piece of work.

What the hell is up with all these 5 star ratings?? Man. Meat Puppets 2 deserves 5 but this one? Up on the Sun is full of lame guitar licks, annoying whistling, chanting, wtf?? MP 2 is like a piece of art while this one is more like a piece of crap, sorry guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album of the eighties Dec 13 2002
By Noisoid

This record is certainly on par as one of the best albums of the eighties along w/ Zen Arcade, Double Nickels, also on SST. This is a psychedelic masterpiece...probably as good as Cream Disreali Gears was when it came out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A necessary purchase for any Pup's fan April 28 2002
Format:Audio CD
Having had most of the old Meat Puppet's records for so long, I was excited by this reissue series, and haven't been disappointed. Beyond the original masterpiece, which others have described quite well, there are five early demos (2 of "Hot Pink" as well as "Up on the Sun", "Maiden's Milk" and a track called "Embodiment of Evil") which are all amazing. In fact, these demos are more adventurous than many of the original album tracks. Track 17, the earliest demo or "Hot Pink" is a mesmorizing jam... it is instrumental, featuring numerous different elements, including some interesting percussion, and clocks in at about 8 minutes, very interesting to hear how different it is from the album track. Track 16 "Embodiment of Evil" is a perfect lead in to this jam, a two minute groove session with a great catchy bass line. The loose jam-rock feel that comes across in these demos is something that has never really been heard in any of the Meat Puppet's albums, making this a very worthwhile purchase for anyone who may already have the old SST issue. For anyone just getting into the Meat Puppet's, this is as good a place to start as any.

I bought this album about the same time as I bought 'Too High to Die' and at first I preferred 'Up on the Sun' because it was more true to the 'Pups previous records, with it's psychadelic guitar and passionate vocals, especially on the title track, as well as the tracks 'Swimming Ground' and 'Seal Whales'. I say 'at first' because I came to be more addicted to 'Too High to Die'...if you're used to cleaner sounding lyrics and riffs that are fairly easy-going, go for 'Too High to Die', if you love the 'Pups for their excellent alternative riffs, backed by some brilliantly vivid imagery (lyrically and musically) and want a truly original, alternative record -
(not that the others aren't, just that this one is more so than some of the later ones) -go for this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect July 11 2001
By Bruce
Format:Audio CD
How many albums can you think of that you like EVERY song on ? For me, the Beatles' "Abbey Road " and "Murmur" by REM come to mind. After listening to "Up on the Sun" by the Meat Puppets for the past 6 months, it has just hit me that this is a perfect album; I love every song on it.
The songs are fast, simple, fun, and really catchy. This record sounds like it is was recorded live in the studio during a session where the band had a lot of fun; it sounds real, not fake. The music is not as deep as the music on the Meat Puppets' album which came before this one (Meat Puppets II) but that's OK, it's a different album (by the way, Meat Puppets II is great and nearly perfect). Most of the songs focus on electric guitar but there are also songs where the bass rules the guitar (Maiden's Milk, Hot Pink). I have never heard bass like this before; it's amazing.
For anyone who likes alternative music, this is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up on the sun... where it never rains or snows. July 6 2001
Format:Audio CD
It's like this... this record is the very definition of beauty. Of course it's flawed... but flaws define beauty and originality. The flaws that I speak of aren't in the songwriting or execution... they may be in the odd monotonously lazy vocal or missed note. But those are what make this album *real*. While many of the songs evoke the feelings of longing and alienation... they also bring you to escape the pains of the everyday world by drifiting into the "Animal Kingdom" in your head... or even floating in your favorite "Swimming Ground". Quite possibly the best album ever.
