Upstairs Downstairs was a classic television series the type of which Britain's television and film industry has become famous for. A pity the video quality on the DVD produced by A&E is so very, very poor! In fact there are only a couple of episodes where the quality can be deemed acceptable (e.g. On Trial and The New Man) However, if you can put up with the poor video and audio it's one of the best dramas ever made!

It is unfortunate that the DVD quality of this set is rather poor, as this detracts from a superb series. Certainly, the suggestion made elsewhere that watching on a smaller screen helps, is correct. It is hard to know whether or not a newer version might overcome the transfer quality issues at some point down the road.As such, while I am a fan of the series, I think I would seriously recommend only purchasing this if one is unable to borrow it from another source, such as a library. As for the comments made in another review about the B&W episodes, it would behoove the reviewer to check the historical data on this series. The first six episodes were, indeed, filmed in B&W. The first was remade in colour. Episodes 2-6 remained B&W, and as such, this DVD set does present them as they should be presented.

Written by my mother L SomervilleHaving received this set of DVDs for Christmas from friends, my husband, daughter, and I have been watching the series virtually every day since then. We have only one episode left to go, and I really cannot bear to think that it is going to be over. While the quality of the DVDs is not stellar, the production itself is so brilliantly conceived, written, and acted that one simply doesn't care. If you have not seen this series before, do not wait another minute before immersing yourself; if you watched the series when it originally aired, you will love it even more the second time around.
