Vanessa Hudgens is not "indescribable," as the MC who opens V proclaims in a hopped-up, hyped-out voice. On the contrary, the smoky-eyed High School Musical star commands a multitude of adjectives--she's adorable, talented, ambitious, and as this debut makes clearer than a set of invisible braces, young. With one foot in the grown-up, club-going world and the other in a powder-pink bedroom with a Barbie under the bed, Hudgens kicks out a crop of hooky and highly accessible tracks here. First single "Come Back to Me" dabbles in a sophisticated breed of disco, "Let's Dance" lets rip a whispery torrent of R-rated come-ons, and "Let Go," bolstered by its girls-night-out lyric, loses its inhibitions beneath an R&B-lite beat. Elsewhere, on tracks no less compelling, Hudgens explores her inner Hilary Duff: "Drive" pops the hood on her pop-anthem side ("As long as I'm alive, I'm gonna drive"), and "Afraid" wrestles with a sense of vulnerability all wrapped up i! n teen hormones ("Why am I so afraid/I can't see what's come over me"). Split personality or no, Hudgens makes a strong case through her Anna Nalick-reminiscent vocals alone that she's someone worth watching--a lot of emotion pours through her still-developing pipes and, as anybody who saw High School Musical knows, the girl can twirl. -Tammy La Gorce

3.0 out of 5 stars Vanessa Hudgen's V - Album Review, Sep 26 2006
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: V (Audio CD)
"Y'all need to get ready to hear the unbelievable, indescribable, Vanessa Hudgens," raps a guest star on Vanessa Anne Hudgen's (High School Musical) newest album, simply titled 'V'. Yet, after Hudgen's catchy R&B inspired single "Come Back To Me" ends I failed to see the unbelievable singer mentioned as the first track began. Hudgen's has musical capability, yet her CD fails to compare to earlier album's released by other Disney acts.

After "Come Back To Me", Vanessa sticks to the R&B vibe and let's loose on "Let Go" - a girls night out song that has a creative big band backtrack. "Say Ok", the album's first ballad, fails to bring any emotion. The guitar heavy girl anthem "Never Underestimate A Girl" comes next - the song is undoubtedly a tweenage spin-off of Destiny's Child's "Independent Woman". A beat driven "Let's Dance" comes next, but the muffled singing and hard guitar beats ruin the song. Hudgen's is at her best on the pop-rock songs "Drive", "Afraid", and "Rather Be With You", which resemble early Hilary Duff material. 'V' ends with "Lose Your Love" - a song reminiscent of Beyonce's singles. Other tracks include "Whatever Will Be", "Promise", and "Psychic".

Although 'V' has its faults, it's a solid effort; and even though Hudgen's has proved she has no problem pulling off any type of music, her next album should stray from dabbling in to many varieties of music as 'V' does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go Baby V!, Mar 9 2007
By iPod Fan 3 - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: V (Audio CD)
I bought this CD with my Christmas money, and I was NOT disappointed! It starts out with the first single, COME BACK TO ME, it's a great song, but honestly not the best. Then the cool, layed-back track LET GO comes next. It's about being to lazy, and we can all relate to that! Then things get slow as her second single, SAY OK, which is about being too shy, plays. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE A GIRL is a kind of girls are better than boys tone (I'm a guy) and it's not one of my faves. Then the album really heats up with the song that makes you wanna dance aptly tittled LET'S DANCE. It's a definate favorite! DRIVE is a song about getting away, or 'Breaking Free', get it! It's the second best on the CD. Then AFRAID is another slow song about being shy, but not as good as Say Ok. PROMISE is another song I don't listen to much. It's an upbeat song that's OK. Track number nine, my favorite is WHATEVER WILL BE! It's got outstanding lyrics and her vocals work perfectlyyy with the song! RATHER BE WITH YOU is a cool upbeat song. PSYCHIC is another just ok song about woring about boyfriend troubles. And finally, LOSE YOUR LOVE, rumors of being a third single, it is another great track. Good beat and lyrics. Hear is an overview of the tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Dec 14 2006

I love this album. Although "Come Back to Me" was not the best choice for her first single, I still think that Vanessa has a lot of talent. I would have to say my favorite songs on V were "Drive", "Promise" and "Never Underestimate a Girl". I don't think she is just "one of those Disney girls" who thinks they can sing, Vanessa has real talent unlike some actresses on Disney Channel who just sing to be considered a triple threat, Vanessa actually is a as she demonstrated in High School Musical.
