Review

"Those who enjoyed Douglas Coupland's pop culture analysis of Vancouver in the best-seller City of Glass will get a similar kick out of V0N 1B0: General Delivery, Whistler, BC...Part ski-bum scrapbook and part urban-planning photo essay, V0N 1B0 chips away at Whistler's big-money hype to reveal what really makes BC's only designated resort municipality tick. To complete the witty and often nostalgic portrait, Verchere draws upon his adventures as a downhill ski racer and coach in the early 1980s, as well as his skills as a cartoonist for the Whistler Answer." (Westworld Magazine 20070201)

"Though this book offers sparse text, it's rich in images, feelings and ideas. V0N 1B0 contains just the right amount of personal observation to keep the book engaging without becoming overbearing." (Yukon Magazine )

Product Description

An irreverent take on the real Whistler -- its vibe, verve and eerie lack of history -- in the style of Douglas Coupland's best-selling City of Glass.

"There is something renegade about having a mailing address that is simply (your name), General Delivery, Whistler, BC, V0N 1B0," writes Ian Verchere. "No fixed address; that has such an outlaw vibe to it. The most carefree time in my life was when I had a General Delivery mailing address; not exactly Jesse James material, but we all rebel against The Man in our own way. I chose V0N 1B0 as the title of the book for that reason. I wanted to give people something different, so they could feel like they knew something more about Whistler, things you can only know if you've lived and worked here."

In fifty witty, insightful chapters, Ian Verchere does to Whistler what his friend and collaborator Douglas Coupland did to Vancouver in City of Glass. He takes us behind the curtain of hype as only an insider can to reveal what makes B.'s only designated Resort Municipality tick.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff, Whistler History, Jan 16 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: V0N 1B0: General Delivery Whistler, B.C. (Paperback)
Whistler is a very interesting place, with a unique (albeit somewhat brief) history. The choice of the postal code for the title is fitting. I lived there when the line-ups of people with general delivery addresses would snake out the door of the post office. That building, incidentally, was a couple of ATCO trailers at the time. Whistler evolved very rapidly. If you are interested in another, more pictorial, snapshot into those developing years in Whistler, check out the book Whistler Changing Images by Brian Hydesmith (ISBN 0969503806) containting 160 photos and 30 newspaper cartoons, also available at Amazon.com.
