Product Description

From Amazon.com

The spiritual element of guitar virtuoso Steve Vai's music has always been rather like the music itself: flamboyant, but heartfelt; sincere, but not always a cinch to understand. Nowhere is that more evident than on The 7th Song, a sort of greatest-hits collection with a most peculiar concept behind it. Vai, who's always reserved track number 7 on every album for a guitar ballad, puts them all together on one collection, from "Call It Sleep" off Flex-Able to "Touching Tongues" off of Sex and Religion. The 7th Song features three bonus tracks, including "Boston Rain Melody," that came into being during a sound check at the Mothership in Boston. That Steve Vai, what will he think of next? --Genevieve Williams

5.0 out of 5 stars this is a music!, July 16 2004

Steve Vai is one of the most phenominal guitarists ever,I think, the best in "Rock" history.
I feel, and sense his feelings in his virtuosity.

On the track 4, I have sat with them on the roof of his house, watching the fantasitic fire and harvest moon.

And on the track 6, when he couldn't stop laughing in the end, I don't know why ,but I was laughing, too,

Every single tune in this album brings me in some memory.
It might be of "Havona" in Urantia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Melissa's garden..., Feb 25 2003
This review is from: V1 Archives 7th Song Enchant (Audio CD)
Nowadays, you can find a lot of ballad compilation albums. Most of them are boring and predictable, containing almost the same songs.
Is a Vai ballad compilation album worth listening? The answer is a rotund YES.
Why?First of all,Vai has this curious tendence of putting a ballad in the place number 7 in his releases.Vai fans found out this so long ago, but never imagined that a record could be done with all those songs. It's like a gift to the hardcore fans who found out.
Second (and most of all),Vai ballads are SOOOOO beautiful, folks. He cares a lot about his most sentimental songs, and you can notice it listening again and again to this record. You can stop charging and programing your cd-players; now they are all together.
The mixture is great, and Steve arranged it using a non-chronological system, which is great because that way is better.I explain. If he had put all the 7th songs starting from Flex-able to Ultra zone, some really sad and moody songs where put in a row and songs more "positive" (as "Burning down the mountain")where at the beginning. So the blend would be unbalanced.
Had started with "For the love of God" is a hit, because it's Vai's most loved and praised composition.Almost everyone "have planned" to make love with this song in the background. Is it true, friends? ;o) "touching tongues" is a song from a proud father who have witnessed a new birth. It breathes passion and epic resonances. It is one of my fav songs of his.
But,unlike the previous good review by Ian (I gave you one positive vote, tough ;o) I find "Windows to the soul" uninspired and so long. It came from his weakest effort so far IMHO: "Ultra zone".
"Tender surrender" and the hidden song "Warm regards" are better, but far from being his best ballads. Some fans claim they are awesome songs, but I'd rather listen to "Hand on heart",from his second best album "Fire garden" (being the first P&W,of course). It reminds me a beautiful summer I spent listening to that record. Thanks,Steve!
"Call it sleep" is interesting, because is an embryo of the "Vai sound",developed in the 6 following years of experience with DLR and Whitesnake.I love "Flex-able"!
I saved the best for the last, the reason why this album is so worth buying. If you have the whole Vai catalogue (as myself),it is incomplete without "Melissa's garden", one of the most beautiful Vai songs of all time.I love acoustic guitar, and finally Steve decided to develope a new song with it (altough there is a bonus track in "Ultra zone" that is a great acoustic too).I don't know who Melissa is, but sure she is so proud of this song.I would be!
I listened to "Boston rain melody" precisely on a rainy day,and I thought that if rain could have melody, scales and tones, would sound like that song.I cry almost every time I listen to it.
"Wall of light" is interesting because is an outtake from the P&W sessions, it sounds like a twisted "Alien water kiss".And I like it a lot too!
Well,if you can't live without Vai's guitar sound floating around you, this is a must. For ballad lovers, try to open your mind a bit and start to hearing love songs without a word on it.Vai says already too much with his music.Words are sometimes not necessary when feelings speak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweeping range of emotions.........., Jan 19 2003

Even though this is essentially a compilation cd of his more mellow material, I think this is also a representation of his most emotional playing. The material dates back to his first realease and pulls material from the 7th song on each album.
I would recommend it to someone first becoming accustomed to Vai's guitar work.
