Canadian Down-East Christmas Classic!,
This review is from: V2 Christmas Album (Audio CD)
My husband and I own Volume 1 and II of the Barra MacNeils Christmas Albums. They are a permanent part of our Christmas music collection. If you are a fan of fiddle music, and appreciate Canadian down-east style, you will love this album.

A lovely traditional Cape Breton Christmas,
By J. Scarff - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: V2 Christmas Album (Audio CD)
This is quite a traditional Christmas CD both in its content and style. The arrangements by the Barras are beautiful, the musicianship is impeccable, and the harmonies lovely. Highlights for me include Stan Rogers' "At Last I'm Ready for Christmas" and Lucy's gorgeous singing on "Ave Maria". The CD is traditional enough to please the older folks and lively enough to not drive the younger set to distraction or worse. Recorded at Kyle and Anita MacNeil's home on the Mira and Soundpark Studio, Cape Breton, NS.

Christmas Album 2 is a very good CD - a nice addition to The Barra MacNeils' original Christmas Album 1 cd. Although I think their original cd is above and beyond this cd, the two together make for very enjoyable Christmas/seasonal tunes. If you do not own their earlier Christmas Album - buy that one first! Then, if you enjoy that type of music, try this cd.I really enjoy the harmonies, Celtic instruments and Cape Breton flavor of these selections. You can almost feel like you are a part of the onset of winter in Canada and away from the hustle-and-bustle of the USA holiday. In "The Gathering Set" and "Christmas Ceilidh", it feels like you're listening to the fiddle while sitting at a cheery, warm fireplace - mesmorizing. And the music of "Dancing Angles" plays lightly like new snowflakes falling. Very beautiful seasonal music which takes you to another frame-of-mind place.

Very Enjoyable, a treasure,
By Brian Brusnahan - Published on Amazon.com
We play Christmas music non-stop from the day after Thanksgiving to 12th Night and have an extensive library of Christmas music from which to choose. This year we choose to seek out new tracks that were either Celtic/Olde World influenced OR weren't simply another rendition of the old standbys. Barra MacNeils "The Christmas Album" and "The Christmas Album II" provided some great selections. We chose to buy selected tracks and I'll not comment on those we excluded, only the following tracks which we did indeed purchase. 01 - Children's Winter - three stars .....Pleasing, new to most song. Plays better (for me) as a variation after having been listening to other, more familiar or lively songs. 02 - God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen - five stars .....A good, traditionalist rendition of a Christmas classic. Gentle vocals, well harmonized and reverently (as is appropriate) performed. Nice 'Celtic' instrumental lead out. 06 - Christmas Comes But Once a Year - four stars .....Easily meets the 'Celtic Influence' requirement. A real toe-tapping, corner pub song. Enjoyed by all. 07 - Christmas in Killarney - five stars .....Another 'Celtic' selection. One of the two best songs from the disk - Great song, great recording. Great fun, enjoyed by all. 10 - Galacian Carol - three stars .....For a non-traditional instrumental, this track plays ok. 11 - O' Come Devine Messiah .....If you're looking for a secular, happy holiday track then you need to look elsewhere. .....However, if like me your Christmas is a "Jesus is the reason for the Season", this is a MUST HAVE track. Multi-part a'capella rendition of an olde world Advent favorite. Perfect. |
