Volume IV is faithful to the ethos of early Joe Jackson hits like "One More Time" and "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" Built around clattering drums, jarring guitar, hyperactive keyboards, snarling vocals, and lyrics riddled with puns and double-entendres, it harkens back to the early 1970s and late ‘80s, when Jackson peddled a wordy and venomous strain of new wave pop. But Jackson is too clever to get suckered by nostalgia. Here he wryly contemplates his middle-aged present from inside his old clothes. The best of the resulting songs, "Blue Flame" and "Still Alive," are as good as anything he’s done. Vingt-cinq ans après leur premier effort commun Look Sharp!, le Joe Jackson Band fête ses noces d’argent. Ces retrouvailles marquent le retour de Joe Jackson au pop-rock musclé de ses débuts, après une décennie d’errements jazzy ou simili-symphoniques. Ces anciens combattants devenus quinquagénaires, dont la reformation se veut plus spontanée que lucrative, n’ont pas pour intention de glorifier leur jeunesse assimilée new wave. En dix jours, ils ont mis en boîte onze titres paradoxalement plus fidèles à l’album Night and Day que Night and Day II paru en 2000. Si le propos est moins vitriolé, Jackson se montre même vulnérable sur les ballades telles que "Love at First Light" et "Blue Flame", l’énergie est restée intacte. Le ska de "Thugs R Us" (et son commentaire social), la mélodie de "Bright Grey" (proche du classique "Got the Time") et l’influence latine de "Take It like a Man" ne dépareilleraient pas la trilogie fantastique du Joe Jackson Band enregistrée entre 1979 et 1980. Pas un exercice nostalgique mais l’œuvre d’un groupe mature qui s’offre une récréation frénétique. --Sabrina Silamo

Arguably the most innovative and under-appreciated songwriter/composer of the past 30 years, Joe Jackson again hits full stride with his old band and new album, Volume 4. I wish he'd get his just due over the airwaves - a new generation needs to discover this gem of an artist.

This masterful Joe Jackson release is as good as good gets! The songs are varied, tight, hooky, memorable, often raw, and even FUN! Joe Jackson and band are truly in top form, and sound as fresh as they did eons ago when they first embarked on their musical journey. This is a testament to how some bands just get better with age, this band included. This is easily one of the BEST pop releases of the last DECADE! Don't miss this one! Absolutely PHENOMENAL stuff!!!

This is easily the best album Joe has made since the first four from the late seventies and early eighties. Even the throwaways are good.
