Product Description

VMware vSphere 4.1 HA and DRS Technical Deepdive zooms in on two key components of every VMware based infrastructure and is by no means a "how to" guide. It covers the basic steps needed to create a VMware HA and DRS cluster, but even more important explains the concepts and mechanisms behind HA and DRS which will enable you to make well educated decisions. This book will take you in to the trenches of HA and DRS and will give you the tools to understand and implement e.g. HA admission control policies, DRS resource pools and resource allocation settings. On top of that each section contains basic design principles that can be used for designing, implementing or improving VMware infrastructures. This book is also the ultimate guide to be prepared for any HA or DRS related questions and case studies that might be presented during VMware VCDX, VCP and or VCAP exams.

Coverage includes:
 • HA node types
 • HA isolation detection and response
 • HA admission control
 • VM Monitoring
 • HA and DRS integration

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome April 6 2011
By Eric Sloof - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Last week I already received a proof copy of the new book by Duncan and Frank and I must say that I'm impressed. When you think - you know everything there is to know about HA and DRS, you should definitely read it. You will be amazed with the amount of detailed information about vSphere 4.1 DRS and HA clustering. Two other great takeaways are the "clear timelines" and "best practices".

5.0 out of 5 stars Deepdive Makes a Comeback! Feb 15 2011
By B. Riley - Published on Amazon.com

The term "deepdive" is regularly abused in the technology world these days. There's nothing more disheartening than walking into a one hour session at a conference entitled deepdive, and finding out that it's neither deep, nor a dive. It ends up being more like sitting in a couple inches of warm water in a plastic kiddie pool.

When these guys say deepdive, they mean it. This book is packed with helpful information from the first, to the last page. Somehow, they even manage to read minds. They know what you're thinking as a VMware administrator, and they'll tell you the why, and the best practice.

Lots of books have good overviews of HA and DRS, but none goes as deep as this. It's very well-written, and highly recommended for anyone who is running, or thinking about running an HA/DRS environment.

This book is, as Jeremy Clarkson would say, "absolutely brilliant"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pssst ... Read This Book for Some Great vSphere-Fu April 6 2011

Never have I seen so much technical information packed in such a small publication!

This one has awesome information on the nitty-gritty about VMware High Availability and VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler.

One would have to search far and wide to find all of the informationed herein, and then they would still probably not be able to match the quality of the information.

Best of all is that it's less than ten bucks for the Kindle version!

Five stars!

For network-based storage (iSCSI, NFS, FCoE) it is recommended (pre-vSphere 4.0 Update 2) to set the isolation response to "Shut Down" or Power off. It is also recommended to have a secondary Service Console (ESX) or Management Network (ESXi) running on the same vSwitch as the storage network to detect a storage outage and avoid false positives for isolation detection. "e;
