You can't shake a stick in Cape Breton without poking some tweedy, twinkly eyed Celtic musician busily cranking out a technicolour stream of vibrant, rollicking traditional jigs and reels. So rising above the pack takes some doing. Think Ashley MacIsaac's cocksure rock swagger. Or Slainte Mhath's clever synthesis of traditional instruments--bodhrans, fiddles, bagpipes, flutes, percussion--with innovative arrangements and even some unexpected technology. While the quintet (the name is pronounced "Slawncha Va") bucks tradition to add spooky oohs and aahs to "Attack of the Flying Slugs," a vocoder (or something like it) to "My New Pants," a sombre piano lead to "Foxhunter's" and almost-rock guitar on "Annie," they never stray far from the traditional Celtic template. Which is fine, because few go prowling around Atlantic Canada looking for anything else, as the now-Toronto-based Sloan can attest. Still, on Va, Slainte Mhath put just enough of a contemporary slant on the caustic and ridiculously rousing music of Cape Breton to remind us that even tradition can reflect the times. --Kim Hughes

I saw this band on tour last year and they were awesome! So, naturally, I was super excited when I found out I could buy their albums online! The CD is wicked! The blend of celtic, funk and disco is so unique and creative combo. If you buy this, order 2 and give one to a friend. I guarantee you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Celtic Rock!, Oct 5 2003

I must admit, I was very skeptical of this group when I first heard of them. I am a fan of the Barra MacNeils, and when I heard their little brothers had formed a group I was expecting some sort of knockoff of the Barras. However, when I gave Slainte Mhath a try, I was shocked. This is nothing like the Barras, and yet I love it even more! If you are looking to try something new and different, look no further. This blend of traditional Celtic music with pop/rock undertones is just plain fun and will definitely get you dancing!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique, Amazing Sound, Dec 21 2005
By iviary - Published on Amazon.com

The first time I listened to this CD, it just seemed odd. But then, it wasn't at all what I was expecting. On the second listen, my feet started tapping a bit. By now, I've listened to it innumerable times, and it has become one of my favorite albums of all time. The band's celtic roots are extremely apparent in every song, but they cast an extremely unique twist on the traditional. This summer, I enjoyed the opportunity to attend fiddle classes taught by Boyd MacNeil, a member of Slainte Mhath, and the experience only added to my respect for the band. They're doing something new with the music, while bringing young people into the celtic music scene, which is absolutely necessary in order for it to thrive and survive.

This band was recommended to me by a friend, and at first I was pretty skeptical, but like the rest of the reviewers, it quickly became a favorite. This is pretty amazing stuff, I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for listen-able Celtic music.
