The wanderer's story is perfect, Jun 19 2003
Squaresoft has always been known to develop quality titles and Vagrant Story proves its still one of the best in the game industry. Created by the team who brought you FF Tactics, Vagrant Story offers something quite different yet refreshing to the world of gaming. You are hero Ashley Riot, a Riskbreaker agent who chases the mysterious cult figure Sydney Losstarot into the city of Lea Monde. Throughout the game, you'll attempt to clear your name for being accused of murder while uncovering your past. Vagrant Story proves you don't need an overly epic storyline to make a game impressive.Unlike other big-budget Squaresoft games, which the storyline or visuals are the dominating aspects, gameplay is the star of Vagrant Story. As fair warning, this is not a game for casual gamers, which someone can just pick up and play. When you battle, a grid sphere opens and you can target enemies' bodyparts. You'll learn to chain combos but your Risk meter will rise, making you more vulnerable. You'll also learn to forge your own weapons and armor, do puzzle-solving and much more. The visuals are outstanding. You feel as if you really did visit Lea Monde with its dungeons and ruins. The character designs are equally amazing and the graphics push the PlayStation to its limits. Sound-wise, while none of the melodies stand out, the music is atmospheric and the audio, from the grunts and groans of monsters to the sounds of magic spells, accents the game perfectly. Although the difficulty level is a bit high and requires lots of patience, it will still be an interesting experience for anyone who really does get into it and understands the gameplay fluently. You have to become deeply involved in order to enjoy Vagrant Story, but once you do, you'll realize you are playing one of the most unique games ever created. It's really like no other, even though it didn't receive enough recognition that it deserved. Give it a chance, it may grow on you.

Vagrant Story Rocks !, Mar 3 2003
"Vagrant Story" is one of the best RPGs ever created. From the first moment when I put the CD into my PS I was swept away by the incredible atmosphere that the game creates. The amazing intro simply left me sitting in front of the TV set with my mouth open, staring at the it[I mean the TV :)].The thing which helped me get into the atmosphere the most was the absolutely incredible sound. It is unbelievable! You just have to hear it.The game also has an incredible story that takes many unexpected turns thus keeping the player under costant pressure. And last but not least its gameplay is the best of the best that can be found right now anywhere.Well I guess that's it.I can't think of anything else I can say about "Vagrant Story"except that every fan of RPGs MUST have it at any cost. Bye for now !

Constant Battling... Not really an RPG, Mar 20 2007
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
Vagrant Story wasnt what I expected, when I bought it, I thought it would be an RPG similar to the Final Fantasy games (It is from SquareSoft afterall) and during my first hour of play I was enthralled, the game was fun, the battle system was unique and the game was so cinamatic my brain leaked out of my ears, but I soon started to think "Were are the towns? Were are the shops? Were are the NPCs? Iv been in this Wine Cellar for who knows how long!"
After a quick check on the internet I found the game was just one huge dungeon, not Metroid or Castlevania like, but more linear, kind of like a large hallway with ever changing scenery.
This is not a real RPG, its an action game with an RPG setting, story, and battle system.
Anyway, I left the game feeling very empty, throughout the "dungeon" you would encounter other characters in the game, but you would only converse during (beautiful) cut-scenes, there werent any shops, so you cant buy new items, they have to be found or made, and the lack of Inns or Hospitals was kind of weird (and it made the game really tough if you low on health).
Anyway, buy this game if you can find it for 15 dollars like I did, you'll probably regret it, but its a game that should be in anyones collection.
