The lap of luxury,
By
This review is from: Valentino: The Last Emperor (DVD)
I was absolutely struck by the luxurious life that Valentino leads, it is stunning. We cover all aspects of his world. We watch his process as he designs, make changes to his creations, the conflicts that he can encounter at the last minute. I can only imagine that it is very interesting for a design student to watch how someone at his level creates - fitting the dress to a living, making endless changes, the bickering of the seamstresses, the disagreements right to the end of whether a dress is right (see Valentino walk off in a huff when his partner Giancarlo suggest to `fill in the gaps' with ruffles at the last minute). A major part of the story is the one between Valentino and Giancarlo, who have been together since they were young. They do not hide their struggles from the camera - but we do see times when Valentino walks off, he does give the air of a diva. We are allowed to see the tension between the Valentino/Giancarlo and their owner, to see the business side of the business. The process of bringing the 45 year retrospective together allows us to see his incredible history in design. So many beautiful gowns. And we allowed into his homes, one of which is the fabulous chateau in France where he welcomes an array of stars and fashion luminaries for a dinner party. It is interesting to follow the `majordomo' who takes care of his households around the world. We accompany him on his yacht, taking a berth in Venice. It is really a rarified world that we are looking into, and it is fun to go on this ride.

WELL DONE!,

This review is from: Valentino: The Last Emperor (DVD)
I gave this film 5 stars because I thoroughly enjoyed it. It covered the most interesting and exciting areas of his life as a designer and millionare. I have a new apprecitation for his work after watching this film. Unlike Karl Lagerfeld's "Lagerfeld Confidential", this movie was filmed well and the content was much more enjoyable.

This review is from: Valentino: The Last Emperor (DVD)
hi,i watched this movie and could not help but feel that it was all a bit odd.i understand that the man is a great designer but the life that these folks lead seems all a bit pretentious and artificial.it seems the whole way of life is about materialism.interesting movie but at the same time it is far removed from real life.map47
