making it her own,

Yes, you're right, Valery Gore, Sarah Slean, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple all play the piano, writes songs and are women! Very good. Now, let's get over that and actually look at Valery Gore the artist and not the comparitive figure. You'd be hard pressed to find the manic intensity of "White Pills" on any Slean disc, or the hushed nostalgic intimacy of "CBC" on any of Fiona Apple's releases.Gore's debut record runs the musical gamut of a straight up pop tune with it's chin held high ("Augustine"), to lush, Real World-type arrangements ("Waded")and to the sweeping romanticisim of the fist raising climax of "Dancing". While no one is attempting to deny the influences of the aforementioned chanteuses, Valery Gore is clearly an artist who has her own distinct voice, style, and charm. She will undoubtedly rise above the comparisons that seem to plague musicians of this vein, and get the recognition she deserves.

Valery Gore's self-titled debut is something else. Eccentric, unique, playful, and oozes major talent. Her voice is quite different but extremely lovely."A Leaving Car" is strange ... yet very likeable. "Augustine" is gorgeous. One of the best tracks I've heard in a long time. The tip-toe piano beginning of "Deloria" is delightful. A jazzy number with bouncy piano throughout the track and compliments Valery's vocal stylings very nicely. "Song For Eric" starts off with this jamming piano and split-fast lyrics. The song definitely jumps out at you. The musically old-fashioned sounding "White Pills" is captivating. Other tracks include "Elliott Goes", "Dancing", "Waded", "Photographs", and "CBC". Fans of Sarah Slean, Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, and the like should give her a try. She's quite a gifted artist and I hope I hear more from her in the future.
