Product Description

Product Description

From the epic title track to the fist-pumping closer, the guitar pyrotechnics of herman li and sam totman light up the sky like a third world war. Vocalist zp theart has no qualms about emulating heroes like bruce dickinson (iron maiden) and michael kiske (helloween), but his lupine howls have a character all their own. Dragonforce plays faster than most bands in the genre - at the time they were hailed as the first speed metal pop group - but the production is precision-tuned and never muddy, allowing the giant slade and andrew w.k.-style choruses the room they need to explode.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better & Worse than the demo April 13 2004
Format:Audio CD
I fell in love with Dragonforce about a year ago while poking around on MP3.com. I so wanted to get this album, but I could not find it in stores. I finally found it a few days ago. Was it worth the wait? Yes, although I was let down in some respects, after hearing a lot of their inital demo CD.
Invocation of Apocolyptic Evil- throwaway track, no rating
Valley of the Damned- The original was a classic. This version however, was a tad overworked. It doesn't sound as polished as the original one. Still a decent track
Black Fire- This song hits you with speed and melody, and does not let up. A new (and great) song, not on the demo
Black Winter Night- Best track on the album. The demo version was kinda tame. This version adds in an incredible blasting keyboard section that almost literally knocked me off of my feet the first time I head it. Not to mention the speed is increased a lot from the demo.
Starfire- A great balad on the demo, also a victim of overmixing. For a first time listener, it's a wonderful ballad. For someone who knows the original, it's a bit of a letdown.
Disciples of Babylon- Very progressive sounding track, nice interlude, still keeps the speed and melody in tact.
Revelations- Probably the most forgettable track, sounds a lot like the title track, and once again, they overmixed the original version. Still, first time listeners will like it alot.
Evening Star- Haven't heard the original, but this track is great. The intro tricks you into thinking you're listening to another ballad. WRONG!!!! More speed, melody, and a subtle keyboard section work very well together
Heart of a Dragon- Great track to end the album with, memorize the refrain if you ever plan to go to a Dragonforce concert, as it screams sing along.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well composed and performed, but poorly mixed July 13 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album boasts incredible vocals and harmonies, the problem is they are very difficult to hear, the singer is hardly audible over the drums, which are turned up far beyond what they should be in comparison to the other instruments. This doesn't exactly help the CD, since the drums are, I think, the weakest part of this band, the drummer is a bit of a one-trick pony who seems only capable of playing lightning-fast beats, even at parts of the song when it feels like the beat should be slower. You want to use slow beats often, so when you increase the speed, intensity can increase, but if you stay at maximum intensity through the better part of a song, instead of getting a more intense number, it just starts to get annoying.
Guitar, bass and synth are all incredibly strong, but like the vocals to a lesser extent, can be difficult to hear at times.
I think Dragonforce is a great band with an incredible amount of technical ability. I think their problem is they often let showcasing that technical ability get in the way of what is pleasing to the ear.

5.0 out of 5 stars English power metal! May 14 2004
Format:Audio CD
What an insane album.
They are so fast that it was almost like listening to a death metal album! Yes you read me right, this POWER metal band's sound was akin to DEATH metal. And by that I mean it has that DM "wall of noise sound". Plus the drummer was from a DM band so that would explain a thing or two. But enough about DM I'm talking about Dragonforce here!
This album bleeds energy and talent. The guitarists must have spent time in an loony hospital in another lifetime (maybe even this one) because like I said before they are completely insane. Solos usually go on for 2 minutes but because of their manic playing it doesn't end up sounding boring in the least. The drummer is also out there. I don't believe I've heard this style of drumming on a power metal album before. There are also some keyboards but they don't really add much. The vocals are sufficient enough but they could be better.
With the exception of a ballad (a not so bad one at that) the album doesn't let up the speed much. The songs could have ended up all sounding the same but fantastic melodies keep this from happening.
Dragonforce are on the verge of becoming THE power metal band of this decade. If you like hyper fast metal that makes you feel like exploding do yourself a favor and purchase this album. You will not be dissapointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Speedy March 15 2004
Format:Audio CD
Considering that Dragonforce are about to fling a new slab of breakneck-paced melodic metal at the world, I figured it was high time I put down my thoughts on the debut, after having a year to take it in. Obviously, the most striking feature is their sheer speed, matching the velocity of most thrash bands, but infusing it with a keen melodic sensibility. These choruses are some of the catchiest I have ever heard. The production is very top heavy; a little scratchy on the ears at high volumes, but I suspect that the material translates well into a live setting. The guitar solos shred so hotly I'm surprised Herman Li's guitars don't burst into flame; but, they can be over the top with the flash and pomp. They can write some great hooks, but the songs are not varied enough to make this a truly special experience; it holds on for a long time provided you don't listen to it too much so that it stays fresh. If they can exert more range in their tempos and dynamics in the future, they could easily top this respectable, but not great, debut full length. I've got my fingers crossed.
