Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Wellman died last year after a nearly 60-year writing career. This collection, edited by Karl Edward Wagner, brings together 26 stories of the sort Wellman was best known for: folklorish tales of the Appalachian mountains, with emphasis on the supernatural. Here we find vampires and ghosts and sorcerers and, most especially, seductive evil women, and they all meet their match in Wellman's most famous continuing character, the itinerant folksinger named John, and lesser knowns, like John Thunstone and Judge Pursivant. Dating from the last 15 years of Wellman's life, these tales are charming and expertly written, but for the most part, they lack the impact and atmosphere of his best work. Some, however, particularly "The Dakwa," "The Petey Car" and "Chastel" are quite good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great selection of stories Jan 30 2010

Stories about John ("Silver John" / "John the Balladeer", Lee Cobbett, Judge Persuivant, John Thunstone, and more.

If you're a fan of "Who Fears the Devil" (and if you've read it, you are!), but you're not familiar with some of Wellman's other characters, this is a must read!
The stories are grouped by character and (within character) are in chronological order ... good editing by Karl Wagner.

If you've never read anything by Wellman, this can be a fine first introduction to his wonderful work.

This short story collection includes a number of "John" adventures that follow those in "Who Fears the Devil?" [ASIN:B0034ZS0GE Who Fears the Devil? U2222]] Mr. Wellman wrote these stories during the last fifteen years of his writing career, before his death in 1986. All stories are excellent; though my personal favorite
was "Owls Hoot in the Daytime," for its wonderful mystery and down-home humor. I have always enjoyed Mr. Wellman's short stories about John more than his novels, and this volume is the perfect companion and conclusion to his previous work. Readers will also meet
several of Mr. Wellman's other mystical warrior heroes. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in mythology: John's journey is our own. For me, John constellates a pure, American myth, our Robin Hood or mystical, questing, virtuous knight. Though it may be a bit harder to hear his songs today,
John still journeys through the timeless mists of the Appalachians: forever young, forever virtuous, and forever American.
