AVOID THIS BOOK AT ALL COSTS!, July 22 2007
This review is from: Van Halen 101: Foreword by Brian May (Paperback)
To categorize this piece of garbage as a book is insulting to actual books. This is much closer to a junior high-level essay. As mentioned in an earlier review, the information presented here is repetitive and not at all informative to anyone who has even heard the name Van Halen. There is nothing interesting or insightful here at all.
In addition to the amateur writing style, many of the "facts" that are included in this journal entry are incorrect. For example, the author states that Nevermind was Nirvana's debut album. The author also states that it is "standard operating procedure" to consider every past and present band members' input any time a greatest hits album is being created. I don't think anything could be further from the truth since musicians continuously lament not having ANY input into these types of projects at all.
Finally, the author uses all kinds of contractions and quasi-words and phrases such as "cuz", "Far as I know", and "shiz-fit". It was all that I could do not to throw this piece of crap across the room every five minutes. The only reason I finished it is because I unwisely donated $30 to this publisher/author.... and I use the word "author" very loosely here. If the writer wanted to come off sounding cool, hip, or current, he should have released this as an audio book. Or better yet, it shouldn't have been released at all.
I really wish I could give this book less than 1 star.

Picked up a copy after coming across a positive review about it in one of the latest issues of our own Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles. Martin Popoff and his crew at BW&BK have never let me down, so when they said this book was amazing and essential reading for the fans I put a lot of stock into that. They haven't failed me yet. This right here is the most complete VH book I've ever owned and I own 'em all. Hundreds upon hundreds of pages filled with everything you want to learn about the band and then some. I respectfully disagree with my fellow reviewer on one thing. The tribute is not 20 pages. It's easily three times that amount and chock full of legendary musicians and guitar slingers. This book is out of this world.

nothing new, baby, Jan 4 2006

I feel a little awkward pocking holes in something that someone put a lot of work into but I'm going to anyway. Unless you know nothing about Van Halen, their is nothing new here to learn. Any hard core fan already knows this stuff. I also found the writing style a bit juvenile, like using the word "baby" once every 10 lines. Also, when I buy a book like this I assume the person who wrote it is an expert on the subject, in which case I don't want to read sentences that start with "In my opinion..." or "I think..." I could do that. The only thing on the plus side are the quotes from other artists talking about Van Halen which amount to about 20 pages or so. Save your money.
