This score isn't so bad, yet it isn't so good either. The themes are overly repetitive and aren't complex. The main theme is yet efficient, representing a dark hero, just like batman. The Transylvania theme is powerful, rapid, and expresses more than well the action in the movie. The guitar has been very well used in that theme.
In overall, it remains an average quality soundtrack, much like Hellboy and other big dumb action movie scores. It does remind Danny Elfman's style, and much of the themes reminds of the original Batman score put on steroids. I better like Batman, it was more well conceived, and the pain is more noticeable, while Van Helsing's seems a bit fake.

With Mummy Returns and Tomb RaiderII I got the feeling that Silvestri was running out of steam. Both of those felt labored over and derivitive of other scores. Then We went and saw the train wreck that was Van Helsing. My mother, sister, and I couldn't help but crack wise ala Mystery Science Theater while watching this really bad movie. But like many Bad movies there was an excellent score hiding inside it. I just loved the opening Fanfare for Dracula and the Theme for the Frankenstein Monster. Then here comes this way cool guitar piece and all three of us sat up and went ooooh! I purchased the cd the very next day and am in the process of wearing it out. The only complaint I have is that the cd is only 45 minutes and there is a lack of quiet music to counter the thundering action. But what can you expect from a movie with no quiet moments anyway!
Favorite cuts are: the opening track , the journey to Transylvania(track 4), and the stagecoach chase(track 8, finally a good track 8).

Hunting and slaying monsters is boisterous work, and when you're on the job, you want a suitably bombastic soundtrack to reflect your every peril-fraught move.
Alan Silvestri's Van Helsing score fits the bill. Unlike the elegant fugues for organ, screeching violins and crashing discords of some classic horror films, Silvestri acknowledges that Van Helsing is less about fear and dramatic tension, more about action and grand effects. So don't listen for musical nuances here; prepare for smashing percussion, blaring brass, chanting choirs and volume, volume, volume.

I like Alan Silvestri. I especially like the work he did on The Mummy Returns and when I heard about Van Helsing I was reseanably sure that he would be back to score the film. I bought this cd upon its release and while the score that Silvestri wrote was different in many ways from the Mummy Returns, it was very good. It was indeed the high point of the movie. Silvestri was able to bring all the diverse and sometimes amnnoying elements of Summer's films into a cohesive whole. My complaint and the reason for 4 stars is that the cd was much too short. The Mummy Returns was over 70 minutes long Van Helsing was just over 40. To me it was a bit disappointing to not get more great music.

I don't have this soundtrack yet, but I am going to get it, so I'll just go ahead and give it 5 stars. I've already seen the film 4 times, and I really like the music in the opening scene, especially when the chorus breaks in. I've read that there is a mini poster that comes with the soundtrack, but I don't know what is on it. I do so hope that the image is of Dracula (the nice looking Dracula, not when he turns into that demonic bat).

I saw Van Helsing just yesterday and immediately after it ended, I hurried across the street to purchase it's incredible soundtrack. Like the movie, the score would not let you escape from what was happening. It was truly an amazing experience. Alan Silvestri's work is completely admirable and he should feel quite proud of this beautiful piece of work. Don't get me wrong, the movie was absolutely wonderful, but I wonder what it would have been without this brilliant score? I reccommend the soundtrack to Van Helsing fans as well as someone who's never seen it and just enjoys instrumental music. Don't expect a nice yoga workout from this album, though.

I highly recommend this cd to all fans and nonfans of the movie 'Van Helsing', starring the mutlitalented Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale. I saw the movie three times and absolutely loved it (My wife actually saw it more times than I did).
One of the things that I loved about the movie was the beautiful, but haunting music by Composer Alan Silvestri. Silvestri's musical score is excellent. I had trouble finding this cd in my local stores -- it was always sold out! Finally, after numerous unsuccessful attempts, I purchased it from Amazon and it arrived quickly. I love all of the music; but, these are my favorites:
1. Transylvania 1887
4. Journey to Transylvania
5. Attacking Brides
7. Useless Crucifix
11. Final Battle
12. Reunited
This cd is enhanced and it contains a nice photo gallery from the movie as well as video game information. I'm not usually a major fan of monster movies; but, I loved this movie and it's exquisite soundtrack and I hope you do also.
