Vanishing Habitats,
By Tami Brady "Whole Health" (Calgary, Canada) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME) (TOP 50 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Vanishing Habitats (Hardcover)
Even as an adult, I still love books like Vanishing Habitats. It's amazing to see the pictures of animals in their natural habitat. It's also extremely interesting to learn about these places and the challenges that they face. The start of the book takes a general look at what habitats are, that there are many different types, and that all habitats have wildlife that depends upon the resources. Then, specific types of habitats are explored. Each section takes up about one or two pages and includes some detailed information, lots of pictures, and a facts box. In each case, readers learn of the dangers faced by these areas because of global warming, pollution, and habitat loss. Vanishing Habitats is a great book. It should be available in every elementary school library. I can see this one being used as a resource for curriculum work.

Robert Bateman appeals to the optimism of children in an engaging book about saving the planet,
By Nicholas Cornell (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vanishing Habitats (Hardcover)
"In his preface to this excellent book, Robert Bateman underscores the current concerns of climatologists and of all of us who care about the Earth ... Good science and very fine art in the form of Bateman's iconic paintings of wildlife and their habitat combine to offer a clear-eyed, visually stunning assessment of the fate of deserts, grasslands, boreal, tropical and old-growth forests and the denizens of each ... It doesn't get much better than this in terms of environmental science for the young." Susan Perren, Children's Books Reviewer The Globe and MailThis is an astonishing book. Parents will learn as much as their children. Robert Bateman's breathtaking and moving artworks are a wonder in themselves.
