The Nexstar HX has to be one of the best enclosures I've ever owned (and the 3rd Nexstar product I've owned), it's well built, fast (even over USB 2.0, this enclosure paired with a WD Green 2TB drive is almost as fast as my eSATA connected Rosewill RX-358 enclosure with a 2TB Samsung Spinpoint) and it keeps my drive cool while being silent, or close to it as I can never hear it over the other things that run in the background such as my laptops fans.

My 1 and only problem with the enclosure is it takes quite a bit of force to get the drive into the correct position as it's quite a tight fit in the enclosure so it's definitely not a recommended choice for those who might have to open this up frequently and either swap or remove the drive inside. That said, I would recommend this enclosure to anyone looking for a fast, reliable and most importantly, cool enclosure to use with their hard drive(s) as it offers all of this and does so at a reasonable price.

Excellent HD enclosure -- it will spin down when not in use May 31 2012
By Craig Van Blaricum - Published on Amazon.com
I'm very pleased with this enclosure, the Vantec NST-330SU3-BK. The fan is very quiet (more quiet than the HD itself) - inaudible from just a few feet. It also appears that the fan may not be necessary at all from what I can tell... One of the main draws is that it has both USB 3.0 and eSATA.

As I was trying to find a suitable enclosure for my HTPC, one of my main requirements is that the hard drive spins down when not in use. I did not want the drive running 24/7. I noticed that enclosure manufacturers almost never specify whether or not an enclosure does this. And reviewers also rarely say whether or not it does... so I'm doing what I can to help.

I can confirm that this enclosure will spin down (turn off) the hard drive when the computer goes to sleep or shuts down. The drive will then start up again on a cold boot, or if the computer was asleep, it will start once the drive is accessed. It has this same behavior with both USB 3.0 and eSATA.

In my quest to find a drive with this feature, I tried two other drives that did not have this feature. The Vantec NST-380SU3-BK will not spin down in USB 3.0 mode. However, it will spin down in eSATA mode in the same manner described above. It is otherwise a good drive.

The Coolmax HD-381BK-U3, which is USB 3.0 only, does not spin down. It's also a cheap drive that I don't recommend.

I hope this helps someone interested in this feature... if you have any questions regarding a particular drive, I recommend contacting the manufacturer. In the case of Vantec, they were able to confirm the drive's behavior prior to purchase.

Good Looking enclosure and works good. Jan. 1 2013
By Javier Puche - Published on Amazon.com

I've been using this enclosure for more than 3 weeks and it works just fine since now, but the fan has stopped working, as other reviews says it is difficult to reach the fan to replace it, I'd tried but you could brake it more in the process, no easy access to it, it seems that the problem is that it looses power from the connector pins since I tried a similar fan and there's no power in the connector plug. The led in the front is too bright, take this on account if you want to use it in a bedroom.

I managed to extract the fan cooler and tested it with a 12V ac adapter and it is working fine, so the problem is the electronic card which is not supplying enough power to start the fan. I contacted vantec usa and wait for them to give me some answer about this problem.

Vantec sent me a new circuit board to replace the damaged one. It is been working quiet well since. I recommend this enclosure, I use it connected to my router as a nas drive.

Missing eSATA? Dec 9 2012
By Dave - Published on Amazon.com

I just purchased this enclosure and I intended to use it for a backup drive for my music collection as I am a mobile DJ (Having no music at someones wedding is no good). I went for this care as it has several options for backup such as USB 3.0, 2.0 and 1.1 as well as eSATA if I have some sort of USB failure. After un-boxing I notice the nice print showing the eSATA support, but to my surprise when I turn the device over no eSATA! I decide to test out the USB 3.0 and as I put the drive in I notice that the eSATA port is there just no cut out in the plastic. I have a feeling if I try to cut it out I will destroy the enclosure. Also the fan is noisy as stated in another review, I don't mind the LED as it would only be used for mobile gigs an not in a bed room. Lastly I am still unable to find out if this is true SATA III (3) or just II for the internal connection. What good is USB 3.0 with a SATA II internal connector. On the upside it works.

Great Enclosure for a 2TB HDD!!! Dec 6 2012
By Luis - Published on Amazon.com

It was very easy to install the HDD inside the enclosure. Worked flawlessly. The fan is very quiet and keeps the HDD and enclosure very cool. This enclosure is solid and well made. I am very happy with this product.

As of 12/25/2012, I'd like to add that the above is correct for 2TB HDDs (and less?). I tried this enclosure with a 3TB HDD and the file system kept getting corrupted at random times. I formatted the 3TB HDD several times and it would work perfectly for a couple of days, but the file system kept getting corrupted without warning. I found via google that other people were having the same problem and experimented with some of their advice. Finally, I placed the 3TB drive internally as SATA and it has been working perfectly for a long while. I am satisfied that the file system corruption has stopped. I believe the enclosure can not handle 3TB HDDs. I have a 2TB HDD in the enclosure now and it is working perfectly.

Fan does not rotate smoothly and makes an annoying noise July 18 2012
By tech geek - Published on Amazon.com

I'm disappointed in this enclosure and would return it if not for the $14 I'd lose in shipping. The fan makes an annoying noise that indicates it's not spinning smoothly and the enclosure is made so that you cannot get to the fan to replace it - if you could I would simply replace it with a better quality fan. This unit also has a full-length BRIGHT blue light sufficient to light a dark room. Why does Vantec feel they must put large neon-blue lights on all their products?
