About the Author

Roberto Martin grew up in a Mexican-American family of 15. While in college he worked in a restaurant, fell in love with cooking and attended the Culinary Institute of America. He became a personal chef to celebrities, and has focussed on nutrition and health. Now he cooks exclusively vegan meals for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. I have been a cook and food enthusiast for most of my life. And although I am not a vegetarian or vegan, have come to realize the importance of a largely vegetable based diet, mainly for the health and environment benefits and have been fascinated by how easily I can make tasty meals meat-free. I was looking forward to picking this book up as it is suppose to convince carnivores to try vegan. But what I found was primarily recipes with root flavours derived from pre-existing products. Field Roast Italian Sausage, Gardein Chick'n Scallopini. And Better than Bouillon Fuax meat stock in almost everything. How about a decent stock, faux meat or vegan mayo recipe? If I care enough about my health to give up meat and try to make my own food, why would I trust someone else to make my main source of flavour. And besides that, some people who may be interested in this book don't live in California, so some of these products may be harder to come by. All this aside, I'm sure Chef Martin makes lovely dishes for Portia and Ellen, as I'm sure they are largely responsible for getting this book made. But if you want real animal-free recipes that YOU can make from ingredients at your local supermarket. Look elsewhere. I'd make some suggestions, but then I'd be guilty of product placement as well.

Coming from the land of Alberta beef, I can honestly say after sampling these reciepes I did NOT miss the meat. Looking forward to serving a main vegan dish to my vegetarian friends instead of them just eating the side dish.

This book would be excellent for anyone transitioning to a vegetarian or vegan diet, or for carnivores wishing for meatless recipes that replicate the hearty food they are used to, so it certainly lives up to its title. I appreciate all the colour photographs, and the recipes are not complicated with obscure ingredients -- it's food for everyone. There is a good mix of healthy dishes and decadent indulgences.

I have not eaten meat for 21 years - but I am not vegan. I have also tried to cut out animal products but again not vegan, I still eat regular sugar, I dont ask if the lactic acid in my can of black olives is derived from whey etc. This book really does seem to be for folks who avoid meat and animal products because they feel for the animals. There was a lot of use of 'fake meat' to replace real meat, which is fine but I had been hoping for some other options. I think many of my carnivore friends and family dont like vegetarian fare because of fake meat (which apparently tastes nothing like real meat - it has been 21 years, I cant remember). I would have preferred to see more recipies without trying to replace meat.
However - some great ideas in here, I have tried a few and will try more for sure.

If you are Canadian, a lot of products the recipes call for aren't available widely here. I made two recipes with substitute ingredients and they turned out nasty
