About the Author

Isa Chandra Moskowitz has been cooking up trouble in New York City since the eighties, when she discovered punk rock and vegetarianism. Her public access cooking show, the Post Punk Kitchen, filmed in her small Brooklyn apartment, has been a smash hit since it hit the airwaves in 2003. She has been inspiring fans of vegan food and loud music ever since. The Post Punk Kitchen won VegNews' Veggies award for Best Cooking DVD and has been featured in media from Bust to Herbivore to Gothamist.com. Isa also hosts cooking demonstrations and can be found online at www.theppk.com.

Terry Romero co-hosts the Post Punk Kitchen and can't believe she lives in Queens.

I'm a huge fan of Vegan with a Vengeance, so it was only natural to buy this book too. It's a cute little book with lots of recipes for fun, creative and different cupcakes that are sure to wow anyone (even my non-vegan friends and family!). So far, I have made the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcakes with Cinnamon Icing and Brooklyn vs. Boston Cream Cupcakes. They are to die for. I've also made the Cookies and Cream variety, as well as the Chai Cupcakes - they are sooo good! The intro goes into detail about the tools and ingredients necessary for the best cupcakes, and also offers a troubleshooting guide. There are a number of photos in the book, and these photos convinced me to buy a pastry bag to try and achieve the same piped icing look! I highly recommend - vegan cupcakes are so fun and cute, and make a nice substitute for other desserts.

What makes this book so much better than average is that Isa's recipes and instructions are clear, concise, and easy to follow. Better still, if you want to make an ingredient substitution, Isa often mentions which ingredients you MUST have on hand, in order for the cupcake's flavor to work out properly. Insights, tips & hints to the recipes are scattered throughout VCTOTW.

This book was my first(by authors Isa Chandra Moskowitz, Terry Hope Romero, and Sara Quin) and definetly not the last. In fact, I was so delighted with VCTOTW, that I bought the more recent Veganomicon. Every recipe Ive tried so far has been just as dependable as VCTOTW. So, In case you ever feel like eating dinner sometime, I highly recommend Veganomicon too.

In SUMMARY..

Probably what sets these authors apart from ALL OTHER Vegan cookbook authors (and I mean ALL - I have many vegan, veggie books on my shelf), is that ...

#1, the recipes taste absolutely delicious (and not like traditional vegan food fare books)

#2 The recipes are dependable(you get what you are hoping for and not another vegan creation). As long as you "basically" follow the instructions, you'll be consistently rewarded for your efforts.

I love this cookbook from small details like the pictures and the ease of use to significant inclusions of great trial-tested recipes that work for the beginning baker (Cake Princesses Unite!) I made the vanilla and chocolate cupcakes topped with vegan frostings in great quantities for a fund-raiser for the 3 Day Weekend to End Breast Cancer. The deliciousness of these cakes convinced dozens of non-vegans that vegan baking is not tasteless, dry or boring. And neither are their bakers!

I don't think I'll ever bake a non-vegan cupcake again! I'm not even vegan and I just LOVE this book. I bought Veganomicon hoping to try some new kinds of recipes that didn't always require the usual ingredients, milk, butter, eggs, etc. I have a million normal cookbooks so I decided to expand a little on variety. I LOVE all of the vegan cookbooks by Isa! I just ordered all the rest because I am so impressed with this one and the others I got from her. The vanilla cupcakes are just awesome! Moist, soft, great texture, easy to frost, not too delicate, and great flavour! No one could believe they had no eggs or butter in them. The variety of flavours in the book, plus all the frostings, I can't wait to try them all!!!

I absolutely LOVE this cookbook. Every recipe I have tried has turned out just as amazing as they sound. Even my omnivorous roommates and friends love them and were shocked when they found out they were totally vegan. You don't need to be a vegan to enjoy this delicious and witty little book.

This is an awesome book. I bought it because I have an allergy to dairy and I was looking for easy, dairy-free recipes.

The basic recipes - chocolate, vanilla, peanut butter, etc - are all very easy. I didn't have to go out and buy anything extra. There are some unusual, more complicated recipes but even many of those don't require much additional shopping.

I have so far tried about half the recipies in the book and they have all turned out beautifully. They are delicious and very popular amongst my friends, who cannot believe (and don't really care) that they are vegan.

I generally wait to give a rating to a cookbook until I've tried a number of recipes. I made the chocolate mint cupcakes (page 73) and took them to a party where they were a hit. They were so easy and delicious I'm awarding this five stars. This darling little book has lots of great colour photos, clear instructions and a cupcake recipe for every occasion.
