Book Description

July 16 2009
Harry Eastwood loves cake: from light, fluffy Victoria Sponge to dark and delicious Forbidden Chocolate Brownies. In Red Velvet & Chocolate Heartache, she has fiddled, tweaked and thought outside the box to pioneer a way of bringing exquisite cakes that remain natural and healthy into our everyday lives - by introducing ingredients from the vegetable garden. Ginger Sticky Toffee Pudding made with parsnip, or Orange Squash Cupcakes made with butternut squash are bound to amuse and delight your tastebuds. In this spirited cookery book, Harry shares her baking secrets and practical knowledge as a cook and as a food writer to prove that it is possible to have your cake and eat it.

About the Author

Harry Eastwood believes that loving cake does not have to be a punishment, either for your health or for your waistline. As she has illustrated in both the British and US versions of Cook Yourself Thin, it's entirely possible to have your cake and eat it - if you know how . . . Harry's passion for food is the driving force behind her writing. She sees food as a language, alive with ingredients. These characters behave in different ways, and have funny little habits of their own. Harry is currently dividing her time between London and New York, working on various writing and television projects. She continues to love chocolate.

This is a lovely book. I have a gluten free diet and at last I can have a cake as a special treat that tastes delicious! I have bought several of these books for friends and family, the latest for a relative who has a fat free diet! They are also excellent for people who eat a normal diet. The layout is beautifully presented ....a special treat just to look at the pictures!

4.0 out of 5 stars good one Dec 19 2012

I like the book a lot because of the writing style. It is not about fancy cooking words (I'm 24 and beginning to fall in love with cooking, so they scare me to death) or complicated steps. I have made 2 cakes so far, and they taste so so sooo good. They have a different consistency but the flavor is super similar to the "real" deal.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic recipes July 17 2014

I don't usually write reviews but this book it outstanding with recipes that are simply fantastic. Every recipe uses some kind of vegetable and they are all gluten-free. I am NOT gluten-free and have been using regular flour with delicious results. However, I have also baked many cakes gluten-free as per recipe and they turned out great. Several gluten-free people have commented on how wonderful everything tastes (email comment today about the mint chocolate chip muffin "this is the first gluten free muffin I have had that is good"). And the best thing in my opinion is that you are using vegetables. Whether you are gluten-free or not, to me this has become my absolute favorite baking book.
