Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

Teaming with her most accomplished collaborators, producer-songwriters Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson delivers what is easily her finest record since Rhythm Nation--and arguably her best ever. Highlights include jams like "You" and "Got 'Til It's Gone", which recontextualises samples from War and Joni Mitchell, respectively; the funky memorial to a dear departed, "Together Again"; and a slinky cover of Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night". Best of all, though, is "What About." An accusatory throw-down for a lover who beats and cheats even as he professes his love, it swings angrily between tender quiet and raging bitter funk. --David Cantwell

Wow...Simply....Wow Mar 14 2002
Format:Audio CD
Janet has had many GREAT albums before the Velvet Rope hit the market (and All For You was wonderful too), but the Velvet Rope has something about it that makes it the best. This is one of those albums where you can easily listen to every single track (quite a rarity, I must say (excluding many of Janet's CD's)). Just as JJ's other CD's, this one contains an interlude between every/every-other song -- these interludes are great though, they are funny, sad, and some are just relaxing, but no matter what they are, the songs all mesh together without abrupt stops and starts of songs.

This CD is a little "darker" in some of its subjects, but it does contain all the "happy" songs we all expect from Jan. For the depressed soul, there is Velvet Rope, I Get Lonely, Empty, What About, and Got 'Til It's Gone (feat. Q-Tip). For the upbeat person, there's Go Deep, Free Xone, Together Again, and Special. Finally for the "loving" people, there's My Need, Tonight's The Night (a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful remake of Rod Stewart's hit), Rope Burn, and Anything. Obviously there's a lot for everyone, and it's all great in a different way. A great album for any Janet fan, but if you're not a fan, it'll probably make you one.

Janet Jackson- The Velvet Rope Feb 17 2002
By John
Format:Audio CD
Probably Janet's best (besides Rhythm Nation), Velvet Rope is the essential pop record for the late 90s. Mixing Sex, funk, and society issues like never before, Jackson embarks on a strange, dark, and exciting journey through the human heart. The title track is pure Janet, and youd swear at times it was 1987 instead of 1997. Biting off Joni Mitchell works better than Carly Simon, and on "Got Til Its Gone", Janet succeeds in mixing r&b with the coffee house folk of "Big Yellow Taxi". "Go Deep" is another standout that screams sexuality at the club. Janet gets her freak on many times throughout the album, whether it be on the dancefloor on "Go Deep", the bedposts on "Rope Burn", or the numerous skits sprinkled throughout. Check the simulated masturbation skit. YOWZA! "Free XZone" explores homosexuality, which sparked a little debate whether Janet was or wasnt. Who cares? These 4 minute sexual revolutions are the best weve heard in awhile. The dedicated to AIDS victims song "Together Again" is vibrant and fun, fun, fun. This woman rocks! If that wasnt enough, theres "I Get Lonely" which raises the question:How the hell can this woman ever get lonely? She does, and on most of the album, she plunges herself into a deep depression; buried within the more poppier songs and the more brutal tunes like "What About". "Everytime" is a great ballad and cements the album as one of the most memorable in pop music's catalog.

A Modern Masterpiece Feb 8 2002
Format:Audio CD
I'd always been a fan of her music, but I truly fell in love with Janet during her "Velvet Rope" period. While she was attacking the insecurities and demons that dogged her, she and her brilliant producers Jam & Lewis were crafting some of the most stunning music of her career. The greatest thing about Janet is that she allows her audience to grow and evolve with her. "Control" was her assertion of independece, "Rhythm Nation 1814" was her take on modern politics and her own emerging sexuality, "janet" expanded on the theme of sex by adding adult itimacy to the mix and "The Velvet Rope" is the fully grown woman in her thirties kissing the past and it's pain goodbye.
For all those who complain about the 'confusion' of the production, or Ms. Jackson's vocal abilities, you're missing the point entirely. Janet is confronting her past through a series of painfully personal songs, set to eclectic, sometimes frenetic but always ingenious music. The songs range from angry ("What About"), tender ("Everytime", "Tonight's The Night")kinky,(Rope Burn" and my personal fave "Anything" {don't those harmonies on the chorus just give you shivers?}) to the accusatory ("You", and the anti-homophobic "Free Xone"). This is a sprawling masterpiece that is still somewhat misunderstood by most music lovers, but given time it will emerge as a towering work that kicked down a million barriers. Janet, you're my hero.
