Brenda Blethyn is Vera Stanhope, a sharp detective with a messy life
Based on the bestselling mysteries by Ann Cleeves, Vera follows a solitary, obsessed, cantankerous investigator—who happens to be pure genius at her job. Two-time Oscar® nominee Brenda Blethyn (Pride & Prejudice, Secrets & Lies) stars as the always proficient but occasionally cruel DCI Vera Stanhope. She solves unthinkable crimes aided by her long-suffering team: right-hand man Sergeant Joe Ashworth (David Leon, RocknRolla), young DC Holly Lawson (Wunmi Mosaku, 32 Brinkburn Street), and forensic pathologist Billy Cartwright (Paul Ritter, The Eagle).
Filmed in the Northumberland villages of the original books, Vera peers into the untamed evil that lurks below the surface and exposes the demons that plague even those who dedicate their lives to good. Four feature-length episodes offer fascinating mysteries and compelling, character-driven drama. In the end, the solutions are rarely neat, and no one comes out blameless.
Guest stars include BAFTA winner Gina McKee (The Forsyte Saga, Notting Hill), Hugo Speer (The Full Monty), Kerry Fox (Bright Star), and John Lynch (Sliding Doors).

Brillant!!,

This review is from: Vera (DVD)
Brenda Blethyn is always brillant but as the top cop in this series she outdoes all the others. She has created a bag lady type frump who brings her eccentric genius to solve complex murder cases. Her character portrayal is definitely unique and fascinating. To top it all off she has two colleagues who are also one offs helping to make the series even more interesting. If you like British mystery series you may find this tops them all.

Vera has the kind of personality that, even when sitting on the couch watching safely in Canada, makes you cringe with fear when she gets angry. The performances here are so stunning that its entirely possible to forget that these are actors acting - high praise indeed. The mysteries drive the stories and are complex and involving. Everything you want from good entertainment is found here - and more. For fans of mysteries, of fine performances, of great writing - this is one to try.

dysfuntional cop family solves dysfunctional family murders,
By
This review is from: Vera (DVD)
i'm a fan of british movies and own all the episodes of primes suspect, morse, frost, midsomer murders, murphys's law, waking the dead, new tricks and many, many others. i was very disappointed in this first series of vera. british police persons follow a hierarhy and political structure that is violated in this series. in the first episode Vera says to Kenny in front of the whole squad "oh look, it's awake". when she felt betrayed in episode two she stormed into the squadroom yelling Kenny was 'fired'. in a similar situation DCI tennison of prime suspect went to here commander and had the offending cop removed from her team. in response to being 'fired kenny replys "i've been hear 27 years. i won't leave". Very just accepts he's staying on her team. if you like dysfuntional family dynamics this is for you. if you want a real british crime drama -- rent first -- i did and will never buy this series. the plots are intricate, but i couldn't get past the crazy 'family dynamics' portrayed by a career DCI.in series two a child say to vera "why are you dresssed like that?" Vera replys "Not all cops wear uniforms". to which the child says "i know. Why are you dressed like that". my sentiments exactly. vera dresses like a 'frump' not a career DCI. in a scene of episode four, she wears a housedress and baggy sweater to have her picture taken, when her sargeant wears a suit. None of the cops are introduced w/ there designation. i'm only guessing her sidekick is a sargeant. this would never happen in any police interaction and certainly not a british one. here, it's the producers of the seies and not the writer who depict Vera as a frump. even frost who calls women "love" wouldn't call everyone that. while Vera addresses the public and coworkers as "pet". it's so unrealistic that the decent plots are damaged by the portrayal of the police. suggest you rent first.
