Given a five-decade career that's been one long series of critical write-offs and subsequent comeback triumphs, it's tempting to argue that the natural elements are actually earth, wind, fire, water--and Cher. Anchored by her 1998 international mega-success "Believe" (the song that made Cher the oldest woman to score a chart topper) and its equally club-savvy contemporary collaborations with producers Mark Taylor and Brian Rawlings, "Song for the Lonely" and "A Different Kind of Love Song," this 21-track anthology is indeed the first to contain all her No. 1 hits, stretching back to her epochal 1965 duet with Sonny Bono on the faux-Dylan "I Got You Babe." And if it shortchanges her Phil Spector-rooted origins and a true perspective on her '60s and '70s career (though kitsch classic chart toppers "Dark Lady," "Half-Breed," and "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" are all here) to focus on her string of '80s and '90s pop successes in service of writers like Diane Warren ("If I Could Turn Back Time") and Desmond Child ("Just Like Jesse James"), it's good to remember that, according to the pop soothsayers, none of them were even supposed to happen, let alone make her an icon for a whole new generation. It's a tribute to sheer, fashion-defying willpower--and as unlikely an argument for the notion of "the singer, not the song" as one is likely to find. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation of her 21 hits! May 30 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is a very great album! I noticed a lot of record labels that she was on. Seemed like they didn't know how to market or promote those albums during her short stints with them. But her singing stood out on all of them and she kept moving forward in her career in music, TV and movies. I like the earlier hits on here, even though it was 1977 that I first heard her songs. Except for I Got You Babe, some of the '60s songs are those I got to hear for the first time on this collection. But the later decades of the '80s, '90s and recently I recognized, especially If I Could Turn Back Time, Believe, Take Me Home, Song For the Lonely and others. There seems to be an emphasis toward her two most recent albums with the songs, but they were smart to cover every phase of her career. This is a fabulous career retrospective on her music and Cher is a true diva in every sense of the word!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My First Cher May 5 2004
By MZ
Format:Audio CD
Never the biggest Cher fan, I was stunned by the droves of people across the country clamoring to her Farewell Tour concert. I never had much interest, although I'm sure she put on a good show.
Then I saw this CD. Sure are a lot of hits on it, so I put it in the CD player and was whisked away.
Aha! That is why Cher's fans said farewell numerous times! It's all explained in a FANTASTIC best hits album with twenty-one (!!) songs on it.
From "Dark Lady" to her remake of the "Shoop Shoop Song" from Mermaids, there is not one song that didn't have me singing.
There it is. I'm a Cher fan now.
So I must whole-heartedly recommend this album to fans and not-yet-fans alike, because it is packed with her best stuff.
See you at the next Farewell concert...

How can anybody not like Cher. Her music is top notch as a solo artist as well as the masterpieces she put together with her late husband Sonny Bono.
This set collects them all and captures her magnificent voice that changed the music industry forever.
I want to marry this woman!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 Decades Of N'1 Hits May 10 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Firstly....there is no other artist who can come as close to either Cher or Madonna. Both of them (are) and will always remain as legendary artists!.
Secondly...I don't believe that this CD signaled the end of Cher's entire (recording) career (...)this is CHER...the women who always comes back, the cat with 9 lives, which she's probably got 4 left!.
And Thirdly...This is a excellent collection of Cher's best songs...While it includes all her chart-topping hits. Well-done, Cher once again celebrates 40 years of Music industry.
This Disk is a must have for fans of Madonna's ''GHV2'' Collection!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cher Originals April 24 2012
By Stella Carrier TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
"The Very Best of Cher" contains some classic songs that have been popular radio staples. "The Shoop Shoop Song", "Half Breed", and "I Got You Babe" are two of the hits featured on this cd. I was surprised that "Love and Understanding" was missing from this collection. Nonetheless, "The Very Best of Cher" is great to get for anyone who enjoys at least one of Cher's songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, except for the sequencing March 23 2004
By Tom
Format:Audio CD
This is pretty much a definitive collection of Cher's hits. Much more comprehensive than the 1999 "Greatest Hits" collection (International only) and the recent single-disc compilation, "The Very Best of Cher".
However, I found the sequencing on those CDs much better than this one. This one starts off with her 90s and 80s hits but it pretty much goes all over the map once you hit the halfway point on the first disc. The second disc is made up of some recent dance songs, classics from the 60s and 70s and some duets from each decade. But I wish the album had followed a chronological order. You get no sense of how Cher's voice or sound gradually changed throughout the years.
The one glaring omission is Cher's version of "Alfie" which hit the top 40 and a favorite of Cher's, and a version which is somewhat overshadowed by Cilla Black and Dionne Warwick's versions. I would also have liked to have heard more songs from her 1987 self-titled comeback album and 1996's "It's A Man's World".

5.0 out of 5 stars Cher is the best!! March 22 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I already have to start buying a new copy of Cher's latest album because I've been listening to it so much! It's a great compilation similar to her earlier greatest hits album ("If I Could Turn Back Time-Cher") but it also includes her most recent dance material. I love the remix of "One By One" (a remix taken from the not-so-sucessful "It's A Man's World" in the mid 90's)especially for the edit because the original is pretty long. Her two biggest and probably best solo hits "Believe" (#1 Pop) and "If I Could Turn Back Time" (#3 Pop, written by Diane Warren) as well as her older number one hits from the 70's like "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" and one of my favorites "Half-Breed." The only problem is she could have substituted "Save Up All Your Tears" with the bigger top 40 hit "Love And Understanding" (another Diane Warren one, both from the album "Love Hurts"). Also the ballad "Way of Love" could have been on here too as well as "Baby Don't Go" one of my favorite Sonny & Cher songs! BUt this is still a great collection even though it's flawed in terms of HITS. One of my favorite Cher songs "Heart of Stone" (from the album of the same title) didn't chart as well as "If I Could Turn Back Time" but still a top 40 hit is on here. Another favorite is the country-ish "Just Like Jesse James" which according to her "Farewell Tour" DVD (also reccomended) isn't one of her favorites (they never hada video but it was a big hit). Anuyways if you love Cher pick up this great collection. Also makes a great gift!
