Hall and Oates often enlivened '70s and '80s radio with sharp pop concoctions that drew on a wellspring of R&B influences picked up in their hometown of Philadelphia. They scored frequently enough, in fact, that this 20-track collection--intended to supplement or replace the earlier Rock 'n Soul, Part 1 with post-'83 winners--doesn't capture all their finest moments. (Where, for instance, are "She's Gone," recorded for another label but licensed by RCA for Rock 'n' Soul, and the terrific new wave/funk fusion "Your Imagination"?) Okay, RCA tried, (and failed once again), to release a definitive Hall and Oates "Best of" collection. I'll keep this review short: if you want the best compilation currently available, skip this one and look up the double-disc Australian import, "Starting all Over Again; Best of Hall and Oates", with a generous 36 songs, total. It contains 17 of the 18 tracks on this CD, ("Wait For Me" is missing, but who really cares?), but also features the full-length 5 minute version of "She's Gone", plus tracks from their Arista releases and a couple of songs from Daryl Hall's solo "3 Hearts" album. It's a much better buy than the CD you're looking at right now.

In my opinion, the lyrics sung by Hall and Oates have been handed down by the hand of God and sang by Angels. Songs like Private Eyes and Man Eater truly bring back feelings of times that were easier and life was a bit less stressful. There is nothing like singing Private Eyes on a mix tape (because they are the future) while wearing cutt off jean shorts and cutting the lawn. Hall and Oates brought the mustache and the Soul Glo Mullet back in style. The cover of the CD shows Daryl Hall and John Oates glancing into your eyes telling you, no DEMANDING you to listen to this CD and listen to the intelligence that songs like Private Eyes instill. If there is only 1 CD that you must have for your collection, it is this one. The CD is truly inspiring.

This is an incomplete version of the greatest hits. What happened to "She's Gone" and "You lost that lovin' feeling"?
